Dont know if you are a seam bowler or a swing bowler. You can always work on nd build your muscles stronger. I also failed to understand what do you mean when you say you are a very good spin bowler but very inaccurate. These 2 extremes certainly can't be together. I suspect you meant that you can turn the ball but you dont pitch it nicely

I suggest go with what you enjoy the most. I made a switch from leg spin to pace, and while i love bowling pace, i'm really a leg spinner at heart. I don't really regret the change though, i went from being a underrated part timer to opening bowler for my school, and i'm opening bowler/ 1st change now for club.

i didn't say i was a " very good spin bowler" but what i mean is i get very good turn but i'm not at all accurate and i'm also pretty short for a pace bowler.

I did something quite similar to you NZF - I started off as a pacer but poor fitness made me go to spin. I went back to pace when I got a bit fitter but had to go back to spin because my legs felt like collapsing on me while running up and school tournament was going to start soon so I just had to go with spin. Turned out pretty good that year there, bagging my first six wicket haul. So, that's how I'm a spinner! Turns out that I can spin the ball massive too, even at my first attempts - guess I was meant for it.

Spinning the ball comes naturally to me, sad to say, it's not the same about accuracy.

Can anyone help me out with a game-plan? I've been told that I was a thoughtless cricketer...
I open the batting and bowl leg breaks, about 1m70 in height and NOT strongly built. As a batsman, what should I be thinking of when I am facing a bowler? At the moment I don't think of anything... As far as bowling goes, what should I be looking out for in a batsman? What do those hints actually mean? How can I use the batsman's weekness to my advantage? Cheers lads:) |

I can't really help with the batting side of things other than the old saying "Play the ball in its merits". i.e. If its short, around leg, pull/hook, rolling the wrists to keep it down if theirs a square leg or fine leg.
In terms of bowling leggies, it depends what variations you have, such as a googly, but look for things like the batsmen going back to defend, a straight quicker ball could catch him plumb in front of the stumps. If hes really going hard at the ball when hes driving, bowl just a little slower, and keep it fullish, employ a short cover, and he might just hit it in the air straight to the fielder. |

sway out of the way of it.....whilst keeping your eyes on it...
if you have to get runs from it ..ie pressure situation.. upper cut it.... glance it over the slips .......watch it and let it roll off the face of your bat ..play is slightly behind you |

i really need help playing ball outside my off stump whenever the ball comes outside offstump all i do is swing at it and usually miss it. I know i should atcually play the ball late but i cant seem to judge whether the ball is coming short or full even though i watch the bowlers hands. I also need advice on how to grip at bat properly as i cant seem to even do that, is it better to be top or bottom handed? thanks...

That pretty much sums up my spin bowling. Our teams lack of a spinner has meant the captain has encouraged me to revive my spin bowling so that he has that option. I still get heaps of turn but the old accuracy needs a bit of work. I don't really want to return to spin though, to much work after spending so much time developing as a seamer. |

Yeah, I hear you. Sometimes as a cricketer, your mind tells you to try another art but it's good not to give up on all the hard work you put into something else because someday, it might just pay off. They say Warne was still half decent at 19, at 21, he was in the Aussie mix.

Johan Botha and Ashley Giles, probably the two greatest finger spinners in world cricket, were pace bowlers.

hey, of late whenevr i bowl legspin or googlies i get a hell of a lot of pain on my ring finger , this has been occuring for at least a month@ I thought my fingert would heal but it still occurs and only when i bowl spin, this is getting really frustrating a i can't bowl and have to opt out of games. Could it be my unorthodox way of bowling using only my fingers? But then again i have been bowling this way for the past 2 years and nothing like this has happened

Strange mate, i`ve dislocated that joint already and I still don`t really get pain from it, only if a ball hit it then i`ll feel something.

Maybe a break/fracture? A guy in my team once a few years back in the Wednesday inter-school hit and giggle fractured the bone in his hand picking up a almost stationary cricket ball. He was out for 6 weeks even though he retained complete mobility in the finger.

Hey guys the U15 season just passed and I didn't get a game because I hurt my back(again) and I couldn't bowl and I can't bat. The reason I can't bat is because I'm afraid of the ball. Ridley(Jacobs) my coach says between now and next season I should learn two things: 1. Not to be afraid of the ball.2. Get my timing right
If I get these I'll be opening the batting next season. Any help on not to fraid the ball.

Just get out there and face the bowling. If you get hit, well it doesn't hurt that much. It doubt you haven't been hit before, and I doubt you won't be hit again. Once you realise it's just 'one of those things' you should be able to get over your fear.

Well obviously you can bat if they're going to open with you, but for the time being you're a bit afraid. What this usually means is that you're probably going back before the ball has even left the bowlers' hand. You need confidence, you must tell yourself that you can hit the ball and that your bat will save you from getting hit. Furthermore, you don't have to play at every ball, some can be left. Get in the nets, go in there with some positive intent (as Mark Taylor says) and try and move forward. Perhaps bat with a lower back lift and just work on driving and straight shots in the nets and when you're more comfortable play some shorter stuff and go for the horizontal shots. You also have a great coach too!! |

Or you can do it the Shiv way, bat with your stance open a bit so you won't get hit much and to be pretty honest young shiv, if you're getting hit on these kinds of surfaces present nowadays in the Caribbean, you're in some need of help.

I used to be afraid of getting hit too shiv. I think it's something you grow out of as you get older and you have more faith in your technique. If you can learn to play the pull shot that helps as well.

I'm struggling a bit with my batting this year. I feel certain aspects have come along nicely since I started learning cricket but I'm still having trouble timing the ball.
I find myself playing shots too early which results in me hitting the ball on the up and giving out easy catches. The thing is I KNOW I'm doing it, but I can't seem to get myself to play my shot later. Has anyone got any tips that might help this situation? I've been trying to practice keeping the ball down when netting but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. Thanks!

Hey mate, well, this is one area where i'm very good at whenever I get to hit a ball that is ha ha. Anyhow, what I do is let the ball come on to the bat instead of carrying out the bat after it. This works very well on slower decks. If the pitch is fast, just let them come on as I said earlier, they already have the pace to go to the boundary.
It all depends on your grip too, if you have it dominate leg side play, driving straight back off a length would be hard, unless you do as I say and let the ball come on. Best you work on being an Indian and use your wrist to carry them legside.
