Graham Thorpe has signed to play for New South Wales once this English season ends. It seems he is therefore set to retire from international cricket after this summer, as availability for NSW rules him out of the India tour in 2006.

Yeah i heard about this so its lookas if it is a time for number 5's to call it time on their career's. Lehmann has walked off to become a selector and Thorpe is bound to quit to now to make room for Pieterson.

Thorpe is still in the frame for the Ashes series, so don't rule him out yet.

Before the series I thought he should have played, and hindsight shows that if he had played instead of Bell England wouldn't exactly have been worse off

Actually, Mark Ramprakash had a very good season, and he's over a month younger than Thorpey.

Ramps is a very sad case - to my mind he was easily the most capable English batsman of the last 10 to 15 years, but for whatever reason he didn't have what it took between the ears or else he would have been a superstar.

Truly a dissapointment as was Graham Hick (99* haha, he could have got 100, he would have known Atehrs wanted to declare).

Hick became England's Carl Hooper rather then England's version of Lara. Talented, but couldnt crack it. I suppose if he stayed in Zim he would have played more tests. England ghave him so many opportunities and he let them down baddd!!! He played more tests then he deserved because he seldom performed and only average 34 in tests when he should of aver 50.

Hick and Ramprakash had so many chances ! As Mik says , when it mattered , they just weren't good enough. Atherton thought that Ramps just got too tense and couldn't break free from it. Hick was found out with the short stuff - he wasn't the 1st , he won't be the last.

I suppose test cricket finds those chinks in the armour - that's what makes it the world's greatest game!

Tecniqual fault in his batting was the short stuff, he performed better in teh ODI arena, because of short bowling restrictions  like Bevan easrly in his career. Hick is a massive under achiever and it is a shame, he could have been in the golden bracket!

That's the difference though - Hick was exposed as having a weakness in his game. All Ramp's problems were mental ones.

surprised that he's gone to aus... probably for the money and the weather.
My two favourite Batsmen:
Jacques Kallis is a very solid but destructive batsmen and not to mention he can bowl as well.
I also like Michael Clarke for his amazing batting talent at such a young age
