Shahid Afridi has been named as Ireland's second overseas player for the 2006 season following the withdrawal of Abdul Razzaq. Afridi will join the Irish squad in time for their opening C&G Trophy match against Hampshire, at Clontarf, on April 23. Razzaq pulled out of his deal at the last minute, saying that he wanted time to prepare for Pakistan's tour of England. It left Ireland needing to move quickly for a replacement and they have found an ideal option. Afridi has found a new level of consistency over the last year, cumulating in back-to-back centuries in the recent series against India. He still holds the record for the fastest one-day century - 37 balls against Sri Lanka in 1996 - and has a strike rate of over a 100 from 219 ODIs.
His brisk legspin will also provide a wicket-taking option for Ireland
and he will be able to form a double spin attack with fellow Pakistani,
Saqlain Mushtaq. What a great signing for the Irish side, that will
certainly have a few worried bowlers among the English sides facing
them in the C & G Trophy Edited by Clobber |

Smart move by the Irish and Afridi! With Pakistan's tour of England coming up , the practice in the local conditions can only be useful to the man.
Many cricket followers will be watching his progress , not least the current English bowlers! |

Right'o! Good for Irland and even better for Pakistan, who are having a tour of England after ending their battle with Sri Lanka. Good luck Afridi!!!! and his good luck will definately complement Irish good luck as well.

It must be said that the Irish aren't real cricket fanatics , Gaelic Football , Hurling and Rugby all have a greater following. But if anything can raise the profile of cricket in the country I can't think of anything better than a couple of typical Afridi centuries!

Yes, I know that cricket is not a first sports of any of the European countries. They really love football. But may be some fabulous hitting form Afridi can promote this game to some extent. Edited by shan |
