I found this list of the Greatest Ever Ratings given by the ICC for batting and was hoping to get others thoughts on it. I found some of the names in the top 10 quite suprising.

I was especially suprised to see both Ponting & Hayden in the top 10, yet Lara, B Richards, Tendulkar & Gavaskar, all who of which are rated better than Ponting or Hayden, are below them. Is this a reflection of poor quality of the ratings system, or is it saying that in top form, these 11 batsmen are the best ever ??

I've never heard of Peter May before but have of the others and Hayden & Ponting dont deserve a mention in the top 10 of all time take nothing from them,there great batsman but top 10 is just ridicilous. I still don't get how this system works but either way it's a piece of crap.

AK , please go read some cricket history! Peter May was the most capped English captain before Mike Atherton broke his record and was the finest on-driver of a cricket ball from ANY country!

    May played in the 50's/60's and you've never heard of him . Hobbs plays 40-50 BEFORE him and you know who he is , I find that staggering.

There's no excuse for ignorance any longer , use the search engines and read about cricket's rich history!!

I did search his name it came up with something about Mexico of some sort.I haven't seen people talk much about him on the forum though.

AK its not a list of the top 10 batsmen of all time, if you took notice, you would see its a list of the "top 10 RATINGS" given by the ICC.

Oh he played 66 tests with a batting average of 46 and a highest test score of 285*,sorry ill search better next time.

doesn't sound to me as if you know what you are disagreeing with them on, the ratings are given for their performances, or their run of performances

It'll have to keep changing. If Ponting fails to deliver in his next couple of Tests his ratings automatically go down.

Dravid fan those top 10 won't change unless someone acheives a rating higher than them, pontings has already dropped below the 937 he had against SA in sydney.

ICC ratings are crap to me. They just go on form. Now look at the ratings

Ponting being there is okay. But Hayden?!!! Why the hell is he there. He isn't even that great compared to the players up there. Nor is Ponting but his forms been really good so its okay. This is seriously crap.

Icc rating is nothing but crap. How an earth is Hayden on that list, Sachin surely should of been on this List. Hayden Odi stats ain't no way close to Sachin but the test stats are close. Hayden got good in the last 10 years but he didn't deserve to be in that list. Ponting is okay, great records in both form of the games.

 I really wounder if it's kingergarden Students who put together this list with Hayden in it. Icc needs serious help.

BackFootMaster and spin those ratings are for Test Matches only!!!

Pontings Rating is so high purely because of the weight of runs he scored in such a short period of time. Sachin and Lara have scored more runs, but, at any stage in their career, have they piled on as many runs as ponting did in such short period of time ???

Hayden is in the same boat, during his rich veign of form in 01/02 he piled on the runs, leaving everyone in his wake. Again, has Lara or Sachin ever scored as many runs as Hayden in that same period of time ???

If not then the ICC are justified are they not ???

I'm not saying they are correct as ranking players by runs alone isn't accurate, but i'm trying to find an explanation as to how they work.

It does not show the best ever Careers
These were for only a tome period of one series. But I don't know why is Lara's 688 runs in 6 iins against SL is not included (WI lost 3-0)

I know how it works. If you score a 100 or 200 against a good team then your rating goes up faster, but if you score that many runs against a lower ranked team then your rankings increase slower. Same for the rankings of the teams.

It's all to do with statistics it has naff all to do with the players ability. The ratings are based on stats not the players ability.

I think you guys can't understand the difference between performance in a point of time and performance during a career. And above stats are for a point of time. Lot of players can have very bright season or two, but truely great ones ahave many good seasons.

I think this thread needs to be locked as it is not making any sense.

Ponting has been performing phenomenally in the past seasons. 14 Tests 7-9 hundreds.Obviously his ratings will go up and he landed up here. Once he performes badly in 2 or 3 Tests it will automaticly go down or maybe Dravid will over take him as he is ranked 2. Hayden. I don't know how he came up there. Its like they didn't know who to put so they randomly picked a player out of the ones in form. In the Test ratings Dravid is 2nd so they should have put him in place. I hope you are editing or planning to regularly post the new ratings Clapo.That way taleast this thread will go on.

Dravid Fan if you took any notice there will be no need to regularly update them as very rarely do we see a batsmen reach the heights that they have above!!!!

sledger could you please lock this thread as it seems no-one understands the question i posed, and it seems pointless trying to explain (i as already have twice) as no-one takes any notice!!!

The ratings increase when you give good performances. If Dravid makes 250 or 300 against Australia, his Rating will shoot up, but at the same time if he scores 300 against Bangladesh then it won't go up as fast. Ponting has scored many hundreds and very qucikly especially against good opponents so his rating kept shooting up. Bradman was always good so his Rating is the highest. I think the SYSTEM is of good quality and and well planned. If Ponting now starts to play real bad then his Ratig will slowly go down and he will soon be out of the list. Its as you said Clapo. These 11 are some of the best in top form.

This is the highest ever rating on individual has got in his career. Obviously a superlative performance will get any one in that list, and by then the palyer will be long since noticed before we look at this ratings

You are uttering blasphemus. It will never happen as this records the best ever performance by Ponting.It will remain as 937. he can only better it'
