If anyone has any tips on how to bat and play any shot and the grip of the bat, you can reply to this thread.

Slog sweep - a very effective shot to play against a spinner. You have to have confidence to play this shot. It is played to a ball that is there for a forward defence. you have to go on the ground like for a sweep shot but now you hit it hard over mid wicket or square leg. Very effective shot against high quality spinners.

In troubled times, being philosophical helps a great deal, it helps you to remain sane and not do any further damage.

 What a jolly good idea!

Hit and hope - When the ball approaches you, swing at it and hope for the love of god it flies out of the ground because otherwise you're! One of my personal favourites this, a shot I try and model my whole technique on.

Hope you soon get the hang of it, happy hitting and hoping.

The leave - one of my favourite and best played shots. As soon as you realise the ball is well outside off stump, take a huge step forward and out towards the pitch of the ball, raise arms and bat well clear and smile at the bowler as he turns round to try again.

               The Cover Drive
One of the most elegant shots in the game but one you don't see that
often in Test cricket because fast bowlers don't pitch full enough that often.

The important things are to get your foot across to the pitch of the ball
and to stroke the shot rather than hit it too hard.

No wonder you won't ever be able to bat or to play for england(lol)

yer but i think he made a good point, you can't score runs if you are not out there in the middle, a good ball outside off stump, if you play a shot at it you do well to get a run and it is the kind of ball that a lot of batsmen get out to, leave and defend the good balls, put away the bad balls(which you get at any level) good point jp

The Drop and Run

My favourite. When the ball's fairly on line.
Block it in to the ground with very soft hands, run as fast as you can and the finishing touch, BIG smile at the bowler to get him over pumped.
Enjoy.

The Biggun'
In times of need and need of runs - you need the biggun. Move your leading leg out of the way and swing thorugh the line of the ball like no tommorow, preferabley on the up. sixes all the time.

No worries - I took it as a joke, even though I have no hope of playing for England anyway. I still beat all my mates on the beach though.

Dravid left 29% of balls faced in his crucial 95 in the 2nd Test. It is an important facet of batsmanship.

NB. Does not apply to run chases in excess of 400.

straight drive one of the most indimitating shots in the game, but difficult aswell, played to a ball the is striahgt or just on the offstump, you need to step out to the side of the line, keep your head over your heels, swing the bat, or push drive which ever remember keep your eyes on the ball, and watch it run back past the bowler he gets very annoyed, very difficult to time this one, don't play at the ball to early you are likely to get caught, play it to late and ur either bowled or u play it right into the ground and could pop back up for a possible double hit, debatble though i woz given out for it gave the umpire a stern look on the way back.

A double hit? You do know you can't do that in cricket, otherwise you are classified as out.

Pull/Hook Shot
One of the best shots in cricket, played to a ball on a shortish length, and pulled away on the leg side towards the square leg boundary. One of my favourite shots, aswell as my natural stroke.

Pad it away

When a spinner (or fast if you so wish) bowler delivers, and it is pitced way outside the line, stick your leg out a mile to meet the ball on the half volley with your pad.

Is it possible to play the hook with a straight bat?

They say it is always good to play stroke with a straight bat, and thats why I always play with straight bat.

My two best are the cover drive and the herschelle gibbs style square drive off off stump.

Cover Drive

watch the ball! after this make sure you're front foot faces towards the covers then simply try and time the ball to the covers

Square Drive

watch thee ball! get into the cover drive position and the open the face slightly and (this is vital) do NOT try hit it too hard

I thought we'd sorted this, no text talk otherwise writing is virtually ineligible, I'm sure other people can vouch for this

The best shot to play is tyhe cover drive as if you play with the bat close to the body and with not a necessarily high backlift it is always going to come off decently.

the play and miss is a fine art. A top order batsmen would probably get an edge on it
