Excellent MVP Ratings system. However, why is Tendulkar not higher in the Test Ratings?

It looks to me like the ratings fluctuate depending on recent performances, and India haven't been in action for a few weeks.

Plus, if I remember well Tendulkar hasn't been in the best of form lately - and his last big score was against Bangladesh. That would kind of explain why really.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that JP.

Do you think Muralitharan is the Most Valuable Player in the World?

No I don't. Those ratings seem far too biased towards recent games.  Mohammad Rafique at 3. Oh please. He's probably the best the Bangladeshis have got but no way third best in the world.

I go by the LG ICC ratings myself, far more reliable.

Having read the bit about the MVP Ratings, i understand that it is more about current performances.

So, good on you Mohammad Rafique.

Anyway, are Bangladesh not always playing better, more established teams, so that reflects a better performance possibly by their players?

OK, maybe I was a bit hasty in my original judgement as it seems they do try and highlight recent performances.

That said, Rafique is just coming back from an injury to play the remaining one dayers against Zimbabwe so I'm not convinced.

This Zimbabwe team is not better, and not more established. Frankly, Bangladesh must be appalled they've not beaten them convincingly from day 1.

As a bangladesh fan , i'm glad to see players acknowledged for current performances. the ICC ratings are okay but you need to be playing for years to get any recognition.

I also think Warne is more valuable then Murali because of his batting.

Murali is too injury prone for me. I'd pick McGrath and Warne ahead of him anyday. And you're right, Warne is a better batter than Murali; so is McGrath, but not by much.

Tough decision to make JP!! McGrath and Warne are class acts , but I have a soft spot for Freddie and Kallis. Gilchrist has to be up there too !!

Gilchrist has to be the best wicketkeeper out there. I'd have Freddie in my team anyday.

Here's a thought, are bowlers more valuable than batsmen?

Without doubt!!! It takes 20 wickets to win a test match , but the batsmen have a lil job to do too!

Look at the series here in SA , Hoggard , with an inspired spell of swing bowling won the SERIES!!! There was some superb batting to set it up (God Bless Trescothick!! ) - but knocking over the SA top six was the difference - ain't cricket just the most fantastic game !!

Just a final word on the little master - Sachin has had this injury for such a long time now and his fall down the ratings was inevitable. The system doesn't take into consideration the bane of all sportsmen - injury....I'm certain that a return to full fitness will see the re-establishment of him at the top of the pile again.

Do you think Sachin will ever get back to his best? his bizarre injury has kept him out for such along time. Plus he's not getting any younger!

He's still a baby mate!!! This niggle does seem to have lasted forever , but he's getting the best treatment and will be back!! His fitness and dedication have never been doubted and at barely 30 he's got tons of cricket left in him :)   Just look forward to his return - there's nothing better than 100,000 screaming fans in Calcutta !!      (PS I know the new name is Kolkatta or suchlike , but I'm old and a traditionalist ;) )

Here's a prediction , Sachin will rewrite the record books and make another 20 test hundreds !!

Another word on the ratings.

Apparently James Kirtley is the third most valuable English Test player at the moment. I know England weren't at their best in South Africa but...????

The guy probably won't ever make another Test appearance!!!

Blimey!!!       That dodgy action and the snail's pace it comes out at should see him quietly finish his career in county cricket obscurity!!

I think the average cricket buff loves the statistics that the game throws up - so it was a natural progression to bring in the ratings system. The results on batting and bowling suggest that it needs a year or so before the top guys rightfully take their places at the summit of the table. Personally I don't take the whole thing too seriously , just look at Matthew Haydn - a few months back he was the greatest thing since sliced bread.....he's gone a touch stale now !!

Slightly different poser - do you think the ratings for the countries is valid.....are England the world's # 2 at the moment?

The table suggests that there's little to choose between the top 5 or 6 - and #2-6 are a way behind the Aussies........that strikes me as being pretty accurate.

I'd like England to play India on the sub-continent about now - that would give a clear indication of England's status if they came out on top.

What do you think , could England beat them in India - I think it'd be touch and go , maybe a drawn series.

I was reading about the now official ICC ratings, and how it took the team behind them years to get to where they are now with them, so I reckon they're fairly reliable.

I think that there is little to choose between the number 2,3,4,5 and 6 teams but on the strength of England's form (4 consecutive series wins, 2 home, 2 away from home) we deserve to be 2nd.

But we'll get a good chance to see just where we are when we do indeed tour Pakistan and India in the winter.

Too true JP ! It'll be a terrific learning curve for the likes of Bell and Pietersen on how to combat real turn - I dream of the day when our batsmen all use their feet to quality leggies !!!

James Kirtley is no longer on the MVP Ratings because he has not played test cricket for over a year.

Inevitably, anomalies may occur in the Ratings system; however, we believe that the Cricket World ® MVP Ratings will become the most accurate acknowledgement of the Most Valuable Players in the World, at any given time.

If you find any other oddities, please do let us know.

Okay anywhere where i can see these specific ratings with the way they are calculated? I have a PhD in math and i have to say that so far there is not one comprehensive ratings index that is calculated with any real accuracy what so ever. Well those that are published anyway. I have seen some private ratings calculated by some of the most complicated methods ever and they give more accurate readings but are unfortunately never offered to the public for licensing and publishing reasons. I have myself been offered several oppourtunities to produce a better system myself but have turned it down due to the sheer complexity of the task. However i have passed it on to somebody else who i think will be better equipped and able to produce a system that is far more accurate and effective. All the problems that you guys have indicated above show the difficulty to get a truly accurate display but there are those issued privately that are pretty close to as good as can be as expected but that is a long wayfrom perfect. However i won't make any judgement on how these specific ratings rate and how resourcable they are until i have actually seen them and seen how they are accumilated.

One big reason that I think Tendulkar is not the no.1 MVP ranked player is because he was having the tennis elbow for such a long time. But now he is back in form with a tremendous 94 against Pakistan. And I think in the next one or two months he could be up their in the no.1 slot.

I think your right,Sporty.

The current India v Pakistan series should see some movements in the Cricket World Test and ODI Ratings.

the reason why Tendulkar is not the MVP is because when was the last time his innings helped India win a game? Sehwag and Dravid r more valuable to India then Tendulkar is?

Why is there only 1 Australian currently in the top 10 for Tests and ODI ? surely with our current dominance that can't be right!

Currently there are 3 Australians in the Top 10 Test Batting Ratings and 2 bowlers in the Top 10 Test Bowling Ratings.

I think that reflects Australia's position.

I'm a Pakistani so dont take my opinion wrongly. i keep up with the all the cricket matches and recently Sachin tendulker hasn't been performing at all. So obviously sachin cant be ranked as number 1 MVP.

The Tendulkar No1 post was made in January so i think his position is well passed by now anyway.

At present, Strauss is the Test No 1 batsman in the Cricket World MVP Ratings and Gilchrist in the ODI Ratings.

everyone has got to admit that sachin tendulker has lost "the touch of the 90s". He was probably the best batter in the 90s but now his career is coming to a close. Sachin himself said that he's retiring after the 2007 world cup. Sachin is just not the same batter that he use to be, he hasn't been consistent at all recently and i don't think u expect much from him now. The Era of Sachin Tendulker has finally come to an end.
