England if you go back have had trescothick and now strauss and cook, sth africa had kirsten and now smith, pakistan had armir sohail, saeed anwar and now salman butt, india have gambhir, aus just recently had hughs and katich, bedfore that hayden n hussey, hayden, jacques, hayden elliot, taylor haydon n west indies had at one time 5 lefties in their top 6, i think carl hooper was the only right hander. You could almost make a team of the greatest left handers of all time to beat the right handers! Three of the greatest batsmen ever are lefties, lara, sobers n pollock

Cook has his moments of glory , so does Gayle. |

Yeah what is it about nz and pak? Have nz produced any decent batsmen? I guess you could say martin crowe but hes not exactly that great. So many openers seem to be left handers too which is odd considering so few people are actually left handed. Milks top 3 are all lefties. Add smith, cook, gayle and the 2 million left handed openers in aus s recent history and theres more lefties then right. amazing!

Gambhir , Strauss and Katich is my order. Smith has been injured a great deal of late and you can't include him. Other than that there aren't a lot of top form and talented openers at the moment. Gayle has his moments, Dilshan is opening now and doing marvellously, while NZ and Pak are really struggling with finding good openers.

Katman? hhhmmm consistent. Gambhir has to be up there. Strauss? hes there or there abouts. Smith? well smith produces the goods but not quite often enough although he usually leaves his best work for england. Id go for mt sehwag simply due to his monster scores. Such a pity he didn't get his third triple.

Problem with Katman is that he gets alot of starts but fails to go on to make big ones thats why Gambhir and Strauss are ahead of him.

He's been very consistent Katich, not in the same breadth as Strauss and Gambhir, but right up there and at the moment ahead of the likes of Sehwag and Smith.

Yeah, Katich has been Aussie main stay lately! Made a terrific century against the Kiwis at the Gabba last year I think and Southee was really moving the ball around.

I guess considering the pressure on him especially without Pietersen and with captaincy, he has handled it very well. Gambhir, on the other hand, has a bunch of legends to rely on but its always better to start your career like that. Top two at the moment.

Strauss' form has been amazing, he looks so easy at the crease and not bothered at all by the bowling. His footworks has been pretty good!

Forgot about him but still 7 hundreds in 9 Tests with some in different situations and the Test Player of the Year Award show that Gambhir is probably the best opener at the moment. Followed by Strauss though.

Yes sehwag must be the best. No fear of losing his wicket and an incredible dude if he gets going. One of only 3 players to score two triple centuries and thats quite an achievement.

Virendra Sehwag. He is most destructive player if he get goings. Just look at his stats whenever he get pass 50 runs in test, he went onto score 150 plus runs.

Haha, funny you have to mention the word 'nancy'. There's a lad by the nickname of Nancy back here in one of the teams I play with and he's probably the best character of the lot. He brings a real good laugh to the team - not a bad person to have around!

True Zuhair, Sledger has a lot to be grateful for of this English team. When I was growing up, they got mauled left right and centre. Not so nowadays, well, at least not in the longer format.

I expect Johnson will target some of them pommie's ribs! Anyhow, Gautam Gambhir will get my pick for top opener at the moment. Wonderful against pace and spin!
