Maybe I overreacted a bit - Tonksy's predictions were made on 5th April - quite some time after the WC had started!!!

Don't worry Sledge, I had Pakistan and West Indies in there!
At least I predicted Bangladesh a) going through and b) beating a team in the Super 8s. |

Perfect Tonksy , well done matey!! We'll have to see how your semifinal predictions turn out.I've been through the entire thread and Tonksy wasn't the only member to predict the final four , but he was the only fella to get the semifinal pairings correct. Others that deserve a small pat on the back are Watson , Superbokkie , Migera , Jayasuriya , SL Lion and vipera russelli - all selected Aus , NZ , SL and SA. For info , I had India in for NZ - dumb huh!! |

These are my predictions: Semi Final 1 - Australia vs South Africa - Australia wins
Semi Final 2 - New Zealand vs Sri Lanka - NZ wins
WC Final - Australia beats NZ and gets 3 in a row.
This WC top four/five are so close and could be any ones! Even Englands!!!

I agree with the obvious four making the semifinals - the only
possible partypooper being England , after the hosts third successive
loss.
Commonsense tells me it won't happen - England look pretty average , but a couple of rain-affected matches or complete washouts might just upset the applecart. I sincerely hope it doesn't happen and the best 4 sides progress , but it is a possibility. |

The theory behind it is in super eights; Austrailia - will win all matches New Zealand - lose to SL and Aus South africa - lose to NZ and Aus Sri Lanka - lose to Aus, SAF On NRRs NZ>SAF>SL Edited by Migara - 02 April 2007 at 7:37am |

I agree with a NZ-SA and an AUS-SL semifinal match-up, but it could be ANY combination of the above four. The way I see it, if South Africa make the final they will win it, but they have to get through that semi-final 'psychological barrier', so to speak. If Australia play anyone other than SA in the final, they will win it. Otherwise, I would pick Sri Lanka to win. NZ are the outside chance, and beyond that, England are a vain outside possibility to sneak into the semis (but unlikely). West Indies look gone. SA for the cup!

JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

those are some sensible predictions.....I could see an Aus vs SL semis. Sri Lanka has one of the best bowling line ups for the world cup along with Australia so it will be interesting if those two teams met. |

Aus vs SL semi final. SAF vs NZ will be the other. The winner of the former semi final will take the cup (Aus or Sri Lanka)

I've just had a thought (it happens occasionally!). Towards
the end of the super 8's it's likely that one , possibly two sides will
have secured a place in the semifinals. That allows them some
leeway in how they approach those last matches and could give rise to
some "shock" results.
My idea is simple , the teams finishing 1st and 2nd have the choice of bowling or batting in their respective semifinal. That would dispense with the toss and reward the sides that performed best in the super 8 stage. It strikes me as a good idea and will make the sides really push for a top two finish. I'll write the ICC and see if they'll implement it for 2011 !! |

Well.....your prediction is very possible. However, you said Aus/NZ...I think that the Aussies have the edge over NZ. They are a good team but I think that Aus is a bit better than them.

Stop bashing New Zealand. They are consistent, especially at home. They would not be number 3 if they weren't. Pakistan are number four because they have the talent to be no. 1 but are inconsistent. SA are the world's best team and seeing as the topic of this forum is World Cup Predictions, I predict SA to beat Aus/NZ in the final.

haha, lol. We beat Australia because they were missing players? I don't think so somehow.
If you look at the last two games they batted extremely well. Having ponting and Gilchrist there wouldn't have meant that they would've got 450, would it? No it wouldn't. They're batting didn't suffer without them there.
In effect they were missing Lee, but Tait didn't bowl that badly, he was actually one of their best.
I will be smarting if NZ get far in this WC, having to fend off all the criticism. Suppose that's life being a kiwi haha. Edited by bond2322 - 21 March 2007 at 8:38am |

So that explains why your boys beat Aus a couple of months back, Bondy. It wasn't their skill - Aus were just missing players.

Your right to a certain extent 143, however you cannot tell me that those rankings mean nothing.
They are collaborated over a long period of time which clearly indicates consistency. On the other hand Pakistan had serious problems going into this world cup. The loss three of their best players, Asif, Shoaib, and Afridi. NZ had a fully fit squad.
This makes a huge difference in any case. With your best players you are more likely to be consistent and when we have had them (Chappell Hadlee Series), we have won.

I never suggested they wern't contenders, but you couldn't call them consistant could you? My post was in reply to bondy suggesting that because they are in the top 4 it made them consistant, hence my reference to pakistan also being there.

143 , just when was the last time the "top 4 sides" made the last 4 in a world cup?
NZ are serious contenders , just go check their price with the bookies. |

They're third in the ODI rankings, making them in the top four ODI sides in the world. Can't argue against that can you? (in a nice tone).

NZ certainly has a big chance, Bond. But only 4 teams can make it through, and I fancy WI over NZ. As for SA, Aus and SL, They're gonna all be tough tough teams to beat. Even by NZ's standards.

Mojo's leaving out NZ and you guys argee?? These pitches are our own domain. Don't write us kiwis off!!! My likely semi finalists are SA, Aus, Sri Lanka and NZ.
India: too inconsistent, also need to beat Sri Lanka to make it through. They win some, lose some, that's they're nature.
West Indies: have the home ground advantage. I'm inclined to write them off because they're also an inconsistent on-day side. However I wouldn't put it past them to make the semis, though the four I have picked are all better sides.
England: can't seem them progessing very far in this WC. They have been marred by several events, no cohesion or structure. They're discipline is terrible.
Bangladesh: Have done well but will stuggle to win when the heat gets on. Let's just admire the talent they have waiting in the wings. Edited by bond2322 - 20 March 2007 at 10:36am |
