Very true but it's not the only way. It's an important aspect, but you need to be stronger and faster too.

would you not say that overall the best way to get better, whether it be fastest or spinning the ball more or infact fitness in cricket is to play the game itself?

Pilates is very useful for fast bowlers as it improves flexibility and core strength.
However, it also helps other muscle groups such as the hamstrings and shoulders.
In fact I would recommend it as one of the most beneficial training regimes for fast bowling.
You would not believe the sweat and effort that goes into 1/2 hour of pilates where you hardly move. It works muscle groups used in bowling.

I got a book on pilates at the end of last season and took it up, two or three nights a week at home. I'd recommend at least giving it a go, if it's not for you then that's ok. I've found this year that I'm fitter and stronger though, and suffering far fewer niggling injuries (my hamstring and calves used to get tweaked every other week). Whether its due to the pilates I couldn't be certain, but it's something that's worth looking into I'd say.

Ppilates does improve core strength but then again so does squatting. I'd rather have bowlers doing front squats and deadlifts along with press ups and chin ups to get strong.
You can never be too strong. |

Isn't Pilates mainly for flexability though? And 'younger' folk generally have pretty decent natural flexability as it is, so i could be wrong but i would see it as something a fast bowler might do from mid twenties on if they were still playing cricket?

cheers for the reply
umm my coach said for fast bowlers its very useful as it uses very deep core muscles which adds pace due to better economy and is useful to prevent injury.
can weights or sit ups etc do similar jobs??

It's OK, it does strengthen your body.
I have never seen any research to compare pilates with weight training, but from experience I can tell you that you can get very good results from weights that I have not seen in any other method. Can any of the coaches who recommended pilates tell you why it's better? |

hey guys
I have heard from various coaches that pilates is the best method of exercise for fast bowlers, even better than weight training etc.
I was just wondering what every1 elses view was on pilates and cricket.
Cheers
