Big heave over cow corner- natural body movement when one is first given a cricket bat. Unless your Boycott who instinctively shouldered arms.

i have kind of the same problem cricketchampion, but in my season this year i have hit quite a few 6s but never been in control of the shot, i have top edged one for 6 couple times :P
usually against a fast bowler i just hook and it seems 2 go far if i get it in the middle of th bat, i struggle against the spin bowlers really i can never hit them for 6, i am a attacking batsman but i only can attack the spinners down the ground |

You have to swing the bat very fast and hold the bat kind of stiffish when it connects with the ball. That will send it sailing and ofcourse, timing have to be there too!

You don't have to hit the ball hard to get a six - brute strength will do it obviously but the bigger ones tend to come from timing it right.
Make sure you not playing the shot too far in front of you as you will lose power in the shot from that - know your 'zone' and play to it. |

Sixes - crowd-pleasing ...... what's wrong with keeping the ball on the floor. Isn't it interesting how the easy-to-play heave-ho scores more heavily than a well placed drive. Bring back the boundary net, that's what I say!

When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat. |

You can tell im young, but whats the boundary net? thats probably a thick question as i know they never had them in the 70s, and knowing w.g he might be making them up but.... go on w.g.

I just recently hit one of my best innings. In that i hit 3 sixes. When i was looking to hit a six off a ball outside off stump i opened my front foot, giving me room for a big swing, BALANCE and TIMEING are the most important things for a big shot, thus you need a good posture. Strength isn't the most imporant thing. |

You might also want to try to get under the ball a lot more, so you get the leverage to hit "up", more bottom hand comes into the pull shots/hook shots, but practise will always make perfect.

I think W.G is right. If you mistime one in the air chances are you'll be caught. However a great drive when mistimed can't be caught and you make the fielders work to stop it.
I'm all for going over the top when the field's in but I don't aim for the maximums unless really needed to.
Look at it like this. Would you rather hit 2 sixes and get caught going for a third or hit 3 fours and still be there?

You can either hit them or you can't. Its all down to your physique and how you use your bottom hand.
But I am not sure why you want to hit sixes. Why not stick with 1s, 2s and 4s and stay safe? When you go for a six, no matter how accomplished batsman you are, there is a 50-50 chance that you will not middle it and give a catch. I know a young man who is an awesome hitter of the ball and can hit sizes all day But when he is playing in a match, every now and then he does not find the middle and gets caught. Playing on the ground, 'sweep the carpet' is the best strategy - safe as ought, |

i just go for it with a 6. usually a higher bat grip and good timing will give me the confidence of trying it - depending where people are fielding tho =P

There are two integrated elements: timing and power.
Timing is the consequence of meeting the ball at the exact moment your hands are working together. Technique is all important here. Power is how fast you can make the bat move. The more powerful and coordinated your muscles the harder you can hit it at any point in the swing. Strength and power training is critical here. Put the two together and you have plenty of big hits! |

Ask yourself when trying to hit sixes ...are you playing them for the benefit of the team or for your own ego ?
if it's the team ....then 2 ways to hit sixes are....take the ball earlier ..in front of you and clear your front foot - if on the front foot...this gives yours shoulders room to come through... back foot start your downswing from a lower position so you get under the ball and complete the shot ... |

I would say it comes down to timing and technique. Also your equipment can have a lot to do with hitting the ball long.

as many ppl wud hve already mentioned.........timing is the key......but i dont agree that we need power....a good example kieron pollard.....he looks like he has power but he cant even bowl a fast ball.....he himself said it and also virender sehwag and sachin tendulkar themselves said that power is jut an add on,if uu actually want the ball to go out of the park.....u just need to time it to get it over te ropes.....after all we get the same oucome, wether it be in the stands or out of the park.....

i have been studying proffesionals and also been talk to my team mates and i get mixed opionion. i am a strong person also been told i am a good opining batsmen. i am quite good with my cuts. but when comes to big hitten i dnt get the elavation i need. and i belive its my grip on the bat! pollard holds the bat at the top to increase whip. but brenden mccullen holds at the base of the grip. which one is the best to use?

It's all personal preference. It can also depend on the bat you're using. If it's too heavy for you then you won't have a great back lift and follow through. While if it's too light you might not be able to get enough power.
Gilchrist used to use a top grip, while someone like Gayle or Sehwag don't. It's preference. Certainly the way Gilchrist played made him suspectible to getting bowled, because he used to whip the bat, rather than play down the line of the ball - possibly due to his high grip. You need to experiment in the nets against quality bowling and get a good bat, one that suits you. Sachin hits big sixes and he's 5'5" and not very muscular. It's all about timing, and having that ideal stick in your hand. |

there is no right or wrong answer to that: whatever way the bat handle feels most comfortable in your hands is the best way.

Clobber is right, in terms of grip, whichever way feels bat to you is alright.
Maybe you could try getting under the ball a bit more, like how Misbah does. I'm not usually a driver of sixes but when I pull them, I have cleared many boundaries with ease!
