Knowing your role within a team is vital. If 11 players all know their roles in a side then i'd say at club level your going to win more often than not.
So the question is whats your role in your team? This includes everything from bowling/batting to your role in the field, in the dressing room, at training etc.
I'll start off so you all get the drift.
Bat/Ball
Last season i was batting no. 5 and had a role of steading the ship whenever we were in trouble. This year i batted at no. 3/4 so my role changed slightly, i now see my role as building the innings and a platform for the lower order, i try to make big scores and build partnerships. With the ball i see myself as a part timer, i look to take wickets with my pace and i am just another option for the skipper.
The rest
In the field we can sometimes be a bit quiet, so i tend to make quite a lot of noise in the field. Our keeper is also quiet so i occassionally have a word in the batsmens ear and encourage the bowler quite alot.
In the dressing room i'm quite a serious character. We have plenty of jokers in our side so i try to keep focus and the captain comes to me for bits of advice when needed.
At training like most i'm very relaxed but like to set the tone by batting correctly (no slogging) and bowling with good effort. I tend to have a chat with tail enders quite often to help them improve their batting...you never know when those 5-10 runs might make a difference!

im alot younger than most of my team mates, im 17 but theonly one in my team under 30, i will never be considered a batsmen, i come in usually at 10 but have tried to take my battting more seriously this season, as a bowler id say i am the secret weapon, on a good day im almost unplayable, but i can be a bit risky if im not bowling well and can leak runs, im generally a wicket getter, but when im bowling wll economy rates and wickets tend to go hand in hand.
in the field im the younger who likes nothing more than to through himself round the field, generally a good fielder, and i excell in situations where there seems no chance

The role for me with the bat in my team is to open and bat through the 20 overs. We have a lot of people in my team who can score quickly so it's not a problem if I only go at a runs a ball. If I don't open I come in at 6 as a sceurity measure, if we lose early wickets I come in to steady the ship and bat the rest of the game in partnership with the other remaining recognized batsman.
I don't bowl but I keep as well.

I'm the strike bowler. I bowl 4-5 overs first up, then little spells throughout. My batting usually i go in at 8-9 and block, block, block while the remaining batsmen scores some runs, once hes out i have a license to swing. Other times if we're collapsing i am promoted to stop the rot. As a fielder i usually stay in areas like mid on, mid off and square leg, where my accurate throwing from a bit of a distance is an asset.

My role with the bat is to open and show sensible aggression. Plenty of drives along the ground into the gaps, chips over the infield. My opening partner is a nurdler so I also have to run hard.
I'm a wicketkeeper mainly but recently I've been working in the field so we can put a younger keeper in. I will admit that his glovework's better than mine and his batting late in the innings is brutal.
So I've been fielding close in, mainly as a slip. I've been asked once or twice to bowl my mixed bag of spin as well. I never go for many runs and have taken a few wickets.
In training I'm a hard worker in the nets. I like to set an example. I also coach some young spinners.

Well I'm usually a number 7 batsman who hits it everywhere. There's nothing better than a clobbered 4 through point. I'm not much of a six hitter, but I once hit a 24 ball 50 and I also once hit a 68 ball century. However, in my 8 years of competitive cricket I've only hit one century and seven fifties. I would describe myself as the lower order hitter, not afraid of losing his wicket but can also win matches with my batting, when it's "my day." I average 18 which tells you all you need to know about my batting.
My bowling is why I'm in the firsts. Though it's only 65mph it swings miles! I can be deadly with a new ball on a cloudy day and a green pitch. I'm the guy who makes the early breakthroughs and gets rid of the solid openers. who cant handle my bannana away swingers. I can also bowl at the death when I feel confident and can bowl a decent full length ball 5 times out of 6. My bowling average is 16 which isn't as good as it sounds as it is only Surrey league, division 2 stuff. |

I don't really have a role for my side! I adopt my roles according to how the match is going, pitch conditions, boundary size etc. For batting of late for 2020's, I've played with 2 sides and was an opener for them. For one, I adopted my own role of getting them off to a flier! For the other, I just decided to stick up there!
With the bowling, on good size boundaries, I just stick to my one role, take wickets. I flight them up and don't really concern if I get hit around. On short boundaries, I'll try to contain more with flatter faster deliveries but still try to take the wickets. I have an aggressive mind set to my bowling and like to set aggressive fields.
In the field, I field all over. I'm not a specialist anywhere but I like fielding on the boundaries as I judge the high catches well and can it all the way from the boundary! In practice, I just like to play my strokes when I'm batting. When I'm bowling, I always attack! When I'm not doing either, I'm having a laugh with the other guys.

I'm having a season off, but last season my role was come on 2nd or 3rd change and pick up a couple of wickets bowling my leggies. With the bat i usual came in late in the order to hold up an end if a higher order batsmen is in, if somewhere lower say a 10 or 11 is in i usually chip the ball around for 1's and 2's and the occasional boundary depending on how long left in the innings.

Filling up the numbers/fearless close-in fielder/very occasional bowler/number 10 or 11 bat who can block a bit, nudge a bit and thrash anything short and wide enough to slog into the middle of next week. But mostly just filling up the numbers, because we always need a couple of people to make up the 11.

I guess my role is the opening batsman or the number 11 batsman, depending on how scary the opening bowlers look! My real role is to take wickets economically and I get used as a bamboozling tool. I usually bowl 1st or 2nd change.
In the field I field at slip or gully; I can't run very fast so I try to make up for that by being pretty talkative. But if I can't catch anything I usually (and quite happily) get shifted off to fine leg.

I love fielding in the deep. I'm a deep legside specialist you can say. I've fielded in the deep a lot of recent times, but no time was on the offside. Only now have I realized. |

Bat/Bowl
With the bat as a n0.8 i am jus expected to use my strength to club as many runs as possible by the time ikm either stumped or caught in the deep. With the ball i am expected to take key wickets (no pressure) and keep the rate down. I do this job relitavely well, and i am now used as opening bowler.
The rest
In the changing room i am team clown (nothing ever changes :P) and in the fielsd i keep the fielders alert and make a prat of myself at midwicket.

I hate bowlers like you, so annoying .
Sometimes i feel that people don't take enough responsibility in their team. At club cricket most of the mental games, responsibility is done by the skipper. I always try to get involved at these levels and have great respect for members of the opposition who do the same.

I'm a batsman. You could call me a rather slow run scorer but get's the job done efficently. I bat middle order, 6-ish. Not much of a run setter but a proficent run chaser. Haven't really developed hitting through the left side yet but love the off. I guess you could say I'm a one sided guy! I'm also a leg spin bowler. I can't really take any wickets being bowled. I either toss it up to decieve the batsman in flight and get an lbw or really toss it up and get a catch in the deep. I can also bowl and accurate right arm medium pace that slows the run rate down efficently.
I'm a slip fielder. Haven't dropped many! I've been known to make catches more dramatic then they seem! I can also keep but that's only if it's absolutely necessary. I'm about 3rd in line for keeping. Add to my already remarkable profile I am also captain and a decent one at that. Not to shift the blame but it's my team's fault we don't win as many as we hoped!

Bat: I bat in a variable position, usually middle order, anywhere from 4-7. Role is as a solid base for the innings. Not the most aggressive batsman so I am more likely to build rather than blast a total. Managed to top score most of the games this season.
Bowl: Main spinner in the team. Role depends on the situation, my captain encourages me to give it flight and take wickets. Bowl 3rd or 4th change because we have a plethora of fast bowlers. When put on my I bowl consistently at one end for extended periods if all is going to plan.
Field: Specialist slip fieldsman haven't dropped a catch this season *knock on wood* Keep the talk up, support the bowler.
The Rest: One of the younger members of the team, so no major role so far. We have a large number of recently immigrated Indians in our team so my role, as an Indian that has grown up in Australia, is a little bit as a go-between the two groups. Captain has mentioned if I stay playing he's got me earmarked for future positions of responsibility.
Play for St. Andrew's Gardiner Cricket Club in the Mackey Shield for the Southern Districts and Churches Cricket League in south-eastern Melbourne.

Last season, I was the captain of my school team.
Batting: Opener - opened the batting all-season for my school team last year. Personally, I feel I have a solid technique. Bowling: left-hand medium pacer, only a back-up bowler. Sometimes, I have my days with the ball. I swing it away from the right-hander. Fielding: I like fielding short. I'm sort of nervy when taking high catches; always had trouble with that. Otherwise, I'm a decent fielder when I try<<<meaning I'm not naturally as quick as flash. Edited by saadadvanced7 - 25 November 2007 at 5:26pm |

Sarcasm right...??? First of all, my parents are more interested in me focusing on my studies. Secondly, I would consider it a disgrace to my family and myself if I represented Canada at the international level. Lastly, I'm only 16, legally not old enough to quit school.
Now, on a more serious note, as far as skill is concerned, I am very confident in my batting abilities. But its just my mentality that bogs me down. I'm WAY too nervy, bottom line. I NEED advice on how to calm my nerves before a game. My coach has tried to help me but nothing really seems to be working.

take a look at harrowdrive.com and look at some of the psycology techniques
also remember that the more you play the less nervey you'll get, try not to put oo much pressure on yourself and feel that if you dont proform you letting the team down.
most fear is based on fear of failure, and its not uncommon

I open the batting and try to hold up one end so we don't lose a lot of early wickets.
With the ball I bowl 2nd change and keep it tight, and take wickets from fustration. I vary my deliveries (bit like Vettori but medium bowler).
I field in the slips and try to encourage bowlers a much as possible.

When I bat, I make the fielders laugh. Clumsier than a one-footed cat on ice :P
Since I'm new to the game, I haven't been given many overs, but I bowl leg spin and get fair turn, enough to trouble the batsmen. I hope to start getting wickets and then bowl more overs next year. I normally field at Square Leg or Mid - off, but I once played at silly point. I was one of 3 year 10's in the team, which also contributed to my lack of opportunity as well. |
