Hi guys, when I bat I find that I tend to have trouble facing slow bowlers. Not because of spin but the pace is far too slow. My main problem is shot selection. I automatically think that I have to hit it out of the park, even though I shouldn't. I'm wondering if any of you guys have this problem and if you did how did you "solve" it? Even if you didn't have this problem do you have any ideas of how to help me.

I guess i never really solved this problem, but when a rubbish slow bowler comes on, i just go for a defensive mindset, i may not score many but i dont get out as quickly, i still try to put the terrible balls away though. I am a number 9/10 though so probably not much help to you.

If you're new at the crease the first thing you don't want to do is advance down the pitch and slog it over the bowler's head. Trust me I've tried a few times, stumped nearly all of them. Only do this if you're confident that your whole body is behind the shot and take into consideration spin. Bat in your crease for a bit, put away the wide balls and use your feet. If you pick up the length of the ball early, maybe play a front foot shot to pick out the gaps.

I'm usually not new to the crease. I'm usually settled and playing the other bowlers fairly well, my mindset just turns to HIT!HIT!HIT! Which is a bad thing.

i know how u feel. but ive worked out that when facing medium pacers and spinners is jsut to wait for the ball to come to u
like i make my feet move as late as possible. but also with spinners who pitch jsut short of a drive...which i think they are ment to. i find im always trying to hit off the back foot but im told that im ment to be driving but i cant cos its just short...ah well. |

I might start using the sweep a lot more, especially if it is a low full toss, just paddle it round.

I would use full face of bat for a low full toss instead of paddling it. For spinners, the key is getting to the pitch of the ball and patience. If you have the patience, average spin bowlers will usually begin to lose it. In frustration they might as well serve a full toss in the slot. You also need to be good at using your feet against the spinners. This has been my problem as well. A spinner came and I spanked him for three consecutive fours but then got out going for a six. I tried to hit every ball which is bad. Patience is the key.

Find the gaps and play shots that hit the middle of the bat. If you get a few boundaries, don't get too excited your instinct might take over and you'll end up getting out if you're not careful. Score singles, find the gaps and as canadiancricket puts it "Patience is the key".

I dont think there's anything wrong with dancing down the track but you've got to pick the right ball and you have to have good enough judgement to defend the ball if its not there to hit.
I think the best way to play spinners is to nudge them around and you can easily accumilate 6 an over with little risk. Saying that the odd big shot can be very demoralising for a spinner and gives the oppositions captain a problem or two.

I find that it's the first few balls against a slow bowler that cause most of the trouble because you've got to adjust to the pace.
I find it best to tell myself that I'm going to block the first few balls from them until I'm used to the pace. I will only break this if they send down a full toss or a long hop which deserves to go to the boundary.
Once I'm used to the pace however I start to play more expansively and make them change the field alot. Playing sweep shots is a great way to do this to the spinners as they normally put a man or 2 on the sweeps, leaving room down the ground.
Doing this can really put a slower bowler off of his game because he's more worried about his field placings than what he's going to bowl.
Dancing down the track shouldn't really be done until he's bowled you a few so you know kind of what's coming in the way of pace etc. Edited by The Tyke - 07 January 2008 at 5:54pm |

That's usually the key to batting.

I'm a Leg Spin bowler and usually find the guys that take to me right from the star eventually hold out or get bowled stumped etc, but the ones that settle in and get used to me and me variations seem to hang around a lot longer if that helps.

hi benkola13,
i have the same probem as you. becase i open the batting i am used to fast bowlers but struggle against the slow bowlers. sometimes i autimatically tend to start walking down the pitch which helps me get to the pitch of he ball. of course there is the chance of getting stumped, but i have good hand eye co-ordination which helps me hit the ball. may not work for you, but just trying to help! |

Take a single and get to the other end.
That gives you some time to get your patience level up and also see how the ball is turning. Next time you face him, you will be more careful about your shot selection. Some slow bowlers dont turn the ball and are safer to come out of crease and hit. Lesser chance of a miss and stumping. Also be careful about the flight of the ball. Thats the thing which deceives most players who got used to playing a quick. |

You need to get it out of your mind that you can hit him out of the park.
Treat him like you would a good bowler. Rotate the strike, your first priority. Secondly, play positively. Not aggresively. If you realize the difference between the two, you wont have trouble with the slow bowlers. Thirdly, how do you respond to temptation in real life? Maybe you need to work on that. It may sound silly, but my friend, we all play the game, the way we play our lives. If you can strengthen your will power in your life, you can strengthen your game against tempting slow bowlers. |
