Hello
I am a new member and trying to gauge peoples thoughts.
Im 30- I was a strong junior bowler but lost interest in cricket around the age of 16-17 .. I recently got back into it a few years back .. I play at a pretty average level not terrible but nothing special .. I bowl seam up and have taken about 20-30 wickets a season at about 20 since I started playing again .. Iv done ok but Im inconsistent and find it hard to control the ball so tend to be quite expensive and get taken off a lot- Its disheartening and Im starting to lose interest in the same way as when I was younger... I've thought about trying to bowl off spin- I think in our league and on our pitches a good off spinner would clean up - Iv tried in the nets but i dont get much turn - my question is this- Is it possible for someone with limited natural talent to develop into a good spinner with good professional coaching and practice..
When I played golf I invested in lessons and it was money well spent but do people think this can work in cricket and worth the investment or will I be left cursing my sporting genes forever !

The older you get the harder it becomes to improve. However you can still certainly become a decent club spinner at your age. It's not an unusual route for an old fast bowler to keep playing as a spinner in later years.
So, yes go for it if you think it can work. I would say at that start that it's important to experiment but not get too clever. Other than that, it's over to you! |

At this age try copy somebody's action. Bowl 100 deliveries a day at the nets. You can't have an action of your own and be successful at this age when you are not a natural offie. I have seen quite a few guys trying this thing. It worked for some and didn't for others.

Like Zuhair says, it works for some and not others. How many times have we seen test cricketers reinvent themselves? It's quite common. At 30-odd Colin Miller started bowling Off Spin and was excellent, certainly Australia could do with someone like him now. Lance Klusener changed from bowling express, to bowling off and leg cutters, albeit with the same action. We've also seen many guys who were bowlers who could bat a bit, to become genuine batsman who bowled less and less. While quite a few players have picked up wicket keeping out of no where, like Jimmy Maher and Rahul Dravid.

Ideal cricketer: Bowl like Warne, bat like Tendulkar, field like Jonty!!
