Hi Ropper, leg spin is one of my favourite topic. Would be great to see which action/grip you use. At the end of the day, it all boils down to what you're comfortable with and not with how people say its suppose to be. There have been too many fine cricketers who did things the unorthodox way (Lara, Malinga, Waqar Younis *round arm*, Mike Proctor, Gayle/Sehwag style players etc). Once its working, do it.

I use a complete opposite grip & wrist delivery than Shane Warne & Terry Jenner. I have always bowled their way and have learned to be like them as its all the information you can get on leg spin bowling (and rightly so it is so successful). I found bowling this way I could only produce a big bouncing top spinner. My bowling is very accurate but I struggled to get a standard leg break. I persisted & persisted with the Warney style but it just wasn't a natural delivery style for me. So I began to experiment, it has taken me 5 years of experimenting but I believe I have found a regular big turning leg break. While experimenting I also produced a slightly different style flipper. I call my leg break UNORTHODOX legspin as it is different to the standard. It's huge turning with better natural variation and quite simple to learn, and my accuracy has improved even more. It really works with my action and I will be using it full time this season so I can justify results. I used it once last season and took 5-32 off 8 overs in the second last game of the season. It felt a little scary using it in a game because I hadn't fully developed it with a consistent action. So I shelved it until after the season as we were in the finals, now I'm ready to use it fully as I have the consistent action it feels comfortable. Once I get through the season I plan on producing a you tube video to fully explain the unorthodox leg spin style and hopefully give people option who struggle with the standard leg break. Cheers! & stay tuned.

Thatawesome, if the grip feels comfortable to you, stick with it. Different grips, actions etc allow people to do different stuff but each should have it's advantages and disadvantages.
I use a grip like Warne, I think that one makes you get a lot more spin because it makes it easier to get out the seam perfectly. One of my mate uses a grip similar to what you are saying, although the index finger is more to the side and the middle finger on top and the ring finger and pinky the more conventional way. He's by far a better bowler than me but doesn't spin it as far as I can.
Your brain is your most powerful tool, just think about getting the ball out straight (as in not have the seam slanted and get the seam out not wobbling) along with strong revolution and it should turn no matter the surface.
Also, this is not something you hear being talked about much but as a leg spinner, it's important not to be too close to the stump. Number 1, you might tend to drag the ball across and lose spin when trying to bowl outside off. Number 2, release the ball in an inward part through the air gives it more chance of curving and even if not curving, it makes it much easier to get it to turn. Go watch some Warne clips and you'll see something about most of his big rippers to right handers. Path inward through the air, gets the ball to curve, drop and spin wickedly.
As an off spinner, the same applies, getting to close to the stumps mean your arm goes across you when you are bowling outside the off stump and the ball will mostly just slide across the batsman. Bowling wider and with the inward path through the air makes it a lot easier to generate turn.
Lastly, its wise not to over think things through too much, you end up complicating yourself. Take it from me. Things will take time to work out. If your grip feels fantastic, don't change it, that's a good start. Edited by spin wizard - 08 January 2011 at 7:33pm |

I've noticed that everyone who bowls leg spin seems to use the same grip as Warney, with the pointer and middle fingerup on the ball, and the two other fingers right down (if that makes sense).I haven't had a lot of coaching ( I just got taught how to hold a bat properly at the start of this season!), and I have developed my own grip. My two middle fingers are up top of the ball, and the other two on both sides drop right down.It is basically like the normal grip except the two fingers that are on top are the middle finger and 3rd finger, with the pinky and pointer being right down.If that doesn't make sense I might post a pic tomorow of my grip. But I was wondering, my grip works for me, but should I chaange to the conventional grip?
Also, when I get a big leg break, it always bounces WAY too high.I pitch it very full outside leg, batsmen misses and it goes quite far OVER middle.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
