Please use this thread to facilitate ideas and good practice for the average club groundsman.
Some club groundsman may not have the budgets and machinery that you have - so any tips are welcomed.

My top tip would be always make good pitches, regardless if its a first class game or a school game. Like for instance, back here, the only time the nets are prepared is when a first class or international game is coming here. It's ridiculous. They should always try their best to get the best pitch.

good evening one and all
Soil temperatures have risen quite nicely this week, most places will be above 6 degrees, so the grass plant will be on the move.
My tip is start your spring fertiliser programme this week end.
Squares that have that yellow look are screaming for some NPK.
If you have not had a soil test to indicate you soils actual nutrient requirements, an 11.5.5 fertiliser, or something close to this blend will be quite safe, applied at 25 to 35 grms per sq mrt.
This will not flush the grass, but give it some strenth to with stand any verti cuting, and indeed the cross rolling that every one will be itching to get on with.
And talking of spring rolling be patient, remember you cannot roll water, 4 hrs rolling when soil conditions are spot on, will be more benificial than 10 hrs in the wrong conditions

Our club pitch is to not put too finer point on it fairly lifeless and slow. Any tips? I don't know loads about our process but I know a bit!

Max Power, there could be any number of reasons why the pitch is slow and low. Are the bowlers any good? Is there any grass plant on the surface? Have you covers? Is the pitch hard?
Have you taken any core samples to see what is going on under the surface? Are there any breaks in the soil profile? Have you any layering? Is consolidation to depth? Have you any roots. Could there be a pan? What part of the UK are you in, perhaps you could get a local groundsman or ECBPA in. Good luck. |
