A bit of analysis from myself on how the current crop of Test captains have generally improved their batting since taking over as skipper.

I would expect you guys to come up with counter-examples - I have only used Tendulkar, Bradman and Brearley as extremes, otherwise it's purely current/recently retired players.

Any other examples of great players whose form dipped significantly while captain or vice-versa?

Didn't look at Chanderpaul's but did think he'd be a contender - understandably though as he was left with half a team to lead!

Chanderpaul overall: 50.20 in 144 matches
Chanderpaul as captain: 47.18 in 14 matches - mostly rescued by 203* against South Africa & 153* against Pakistan.

He also only won one of those giving him a win percentage of 7.2.

It throws up another statistical piece of interest - players who've played the most games without captaining or hardly captained. I think Boucher holds the record for Tests but 14/144 from Shiv is quite low considering he's been a senior player for some years.

Not entirely sure but I think Michael Vaughan had a much better record as a captain as compared to his record when he was a normal player. Stephen Fleming's batting record as a captain must be much better too.

For players who played a lot but hardly or never captained the side, Jacques Kallis must be right up there, other names I can think of are VVS Laxman, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralidaran, Chaminda Vaas, and I'm sure we'll get many more in this category.

How did Carl Hooper go JP, as far as i can remember (although I was 13 years and under during his time), I think he improved a bit when he was captain?? Maybe was for a few games but maybe worth a check.

< ="text/" ="" ="/B1D671CF-E532-4481-99AA-19F420D90332etdefender/huidhui.js?0=0&0=0&0=0"> Bit late with this but Carl Hooper's stats below:

Overall: 102 Tests, 5,762 runs at 36.46
As captain: 22 Tests, 1,609 runs at 45.97 - a huge jump!

Of those, he won 4 - that's a percentage of 18.2
