Michael Slater wasn't a member of the one day setup , Junior opened with Gilchrist.

For me Gary Kirsten and Gibbs, the two made a lot of platforms more than individual scores, that is team work right there.

From my time, it's Hayden and Langer in tests and Tendulkar and Ganguly in ODI's.

Haynes and Greenidge...one of the best opening pair ever.

Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail...Pakistan's best opening pair... and probably the only decent opening pair we've had for quite a while now.

Of recent times (because nobody can remember too far back), it is pretty obvious that langer/hayden and gibbs/kirsten partnerships were the best by a mile. Its hard to say which is better because they both have opening partnership averages of about 50. I would say gibbs/kirsten is the better partnership because they had more pressure than hayden and langer ever did.
My two favourite Batsmen:
Jacques Kallis is a very solid but destructive batsmen and not to mention he can bowl as well.
I also like Michael Clarke for his amazing batting talent at such a young age

D.Haynes and Greenidge were the best opening batsmans who play together for long time and WI claims many victories in past because of their opening partnerships.Aamir and Saeed were also best but in one day cricket.

Sachin and Sehwag are a decent opening pair but I don't know if you can classify them as one of the best.

Hayden and Langer only need two more centuries to tie the record of 16 centuries.

I'd reckon that Herbert Sutcliffe and Jack Hobbs would be the opening batsmen in most Englishmens dream Test eleven* and I couldn't believe they weren't included in the poll. Interesting that Hayden and Langer are fast closing up on the record of 16 centuries (Greenidge and Haynes.)

*save for those who'd have Hobbs opening with Hutton.

greenidge and haynes were the best opening pair ever!  not just because of the # of partnerships they put together, but in the manner they did... dominated at most times, and during an era which was the richest in terms of quality of bowling...

all successful pairs of the last 5-10 years stand no where close to them... the bowling has deteriorated all over (most good bowlers have retired... + McWarne are in their dusk); and todays pitches are batsmen friendly...

so lets not even compare them! they were a altogether superior class and in a superior era!

Smith - AB Dvilliars have about 90 opening partnership is short time

Smith - Gibbs who opened for more than 26 tests avg about 68 runs

while Langer and Hayden avg about 48 runs in 55 odd test matches

Haynes - Greenidge who played for about 85 tests avg about 46 runs

Hayden and Langer are the Best Today and are one of, if not the best ever..

In my eyes though Greenidge and Haynes (West Indies) were the best ever... they slaughtered so many attacks around the world... and for so long
