Opinions on Vettori the Batsmen.

He must surely be at genuine all rounder status he averages 36 odd at number 8 higher than freddies average.

Yes, Vettori is genuinely a good batsman but he seems underrated a lot of the time but I'm surprised to see he only bowled a couple of overs in both innings combined against Sri Lanka the other day.
On extended leave...

Great batsmen to have down the order, but he has to remember he is a bowler first. I think he has forgotten that recently and hasnt bowled with that same skill he had not to long ago.

Vettori is a perfect number 8 - he musn't move up the order , he'd be found out pretty quickly.

I think he's already as good as FLintoff, given his current disastrous form.

This thread has to brought up from the ages.

An interesting article on cricinfo highlighted Vettoris form over the past 5 years. Infact, the writer stated that he was infact the best allrounder over the past half-decade. His 88 against England and a superb display of bowling proved this very fact. Also, his current position as the worlds top ODI bowler proves Vettoris versatility between the two forms of cricket.

His captaincy has also shown remarkable maturity for such a short time frame.

Pretty good prediction here. I reckon he'll make a great captain but for now, I think he'll settle for being a good captain.

Vettori is stunningly clever with his bowling so I guess he could do the same with the captaincy and his batting is good too. An all rounder surely!

Easily an all rounder. better than any other spinner-batsman from the modern era. But rightly said by Sledge, he should stick to number 8.

Vettori has explained that the reason he hasn't taken more wickets in tests is due to two main factors;

- NZ predominately produce green-tops of which Vettori has been in a winning side where he hasn't bowled more than 10 overs in an entire match.
- Due to the lack of batting prowess in the NZ side the bowling attack is usually under pressure and unable to attack, i.e. Vettori comes on to bowl when the runs need to be stemmed.

He's the number one ranked ODI bowler in the world and that isn't against mediocre oppositions either - NZ play the Chappell/Hadlee series annually. His batting has come on leaps and bounds in the last 5 years and often he's been under-pressure to salvage vital runs.

And now, he's becoming an excellent captain too. He's a modern-day cricketing hero for NZ and I can't see why the next 5-6 years NZ can't maintain/improve our position within world cricket.
Good one Graham!

My statement is conditional, rather than conclusive, zuhair.

I read this article on cricinfo, in the last two years of test Vetorri has averaged 48.18 far and away the best New Zealander.
