Topic: west indies 1980s or australia 2000s Posted: 19 November 2005 at 4:18am |
i think teams like south africa and england will resent that statement, they are certainly not weak...in fact it wasn't too long ago when South Africa posed a significant threat to Australia's top spot, and the Australians fought them off. Bowlers like pollock and donald formed strong attacks.
Tendulkar, Lara - two of the greatest batsman ever play in today's game, Murali, the world's most prolific wicket taker after warne...there are plenty of stars around today

yea, but today every team has only one big star or maybe a couple. Back in the 80s every team had not just one player to rely on, they had bowlers, batters, and all-rounders. For example, in 1988 Pakistan had Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis. This made it harder for the West Indies of the 80s to remain the best...there was so much competition.

| i see your point of view, but the fact still remains that Pollock and Donald never really put Australia under pressure compared to their efforts versus other teams. the aussies during their dominance so far have had t relatively easy, but it has indeed changed during the last year and a half with teams like england able to have bowlers who can execute plans. |

It has changed during the last few years because it is quite obvious that the australian dominance will end in about 2 or at the most 3 more years. Before, when Steve Waugh was captain, they were the world's best and there was no doubt about it. Now they can be compared to SA in ODIs and England in Tests.
The West Indies of the 80s were never the only team with great players in the 80s. As I already mentioned other teams had a lot of great players as well which made it harder for the West Indies of the 80s to stay at the top in International cricket. Which is why the West Indies of the 80s are better than the Aussies of today.

Yea, india probably have a chance of becoming the best team in ODIs. What do you think about Pakistan becoming the best team in ODIs?

Yea, that's right. Pakistan do need to perform consistently and win consistently to be known as the best ODI team.

Ha ha, very funny...
Pakistan are not that inconsistent in ODIs. This year they beat India in the ODI series in India and followed that up with a white washing against West Indies in West Indies. That was a great performance by Pakistan.
I will admit that they are probably one of the most inconsistent teams in tests. They win some and lose some. They are not consistent.

We'll see this summer if South Africa can take it up to the Aussies
Definately England have a good chance of becoming the dominant team.

Yea, there is no doubt that England are going to be the best in tests, and as for ODIs, SA have the best chances. they are a young team and have some experienced players and a lot of talent.

Can you clarify what you mean by "inzamam tries so hard and at times it's difficult to get enough support from the others."
Yousuf Youhana has changed his name to Mohammad Yousuf because he has converted to Islam. He is a Muslim and so he needed to change his name.

wat i meant was that he works hard on the field. and that change of religions to me hasnt helped him as yet. should have just kept to his original name.

Some people are saying Mohammad Yousuf became muslim because he was afraid that if he remained christian, the Pakistan cricket board wouldn't make him captain after Inzamam is gone based on the fact that he is christian. But others say that's just a rumor and it's false. I, personally believe it's false.
