Hi all,
After a lengthy googling session, I've discovered that the internet has absolutely no decent information on what factors affect the pick-up of a bat. You all seem to know what you're talking about, so I don't know of anwhere better to ask the question. From the little I've read in the Weight of Cricket Bats thread, it's something to do the bats centre of gravity, but would anyone care to shead a little more light on this? Any help appreceiated, Andy |

The closer to the toe the 'meat' of the bat is (ie the thickest part), the heavy it will feel in your hand, due to levers, fulcra, forces etc etc, physics and all that jazz. The pickup is also affected by the distribution of weight throughout the bat, ie if it is unevenly spread then the pickup will feel heavier at one point in the pickup from another, so it feels ungainly and hence becomes harder to time well.

good thread, short and to the point.
So u can have a light bat with a bad pick up,and a heavier one with good pick up.
one concern though, moving the meat towards the top can leave ur toe end unprotected/prone to damage? Edited by harsy222 - 09 May 2007 at 12:44pm |

Each to his own mate , what is the weight of the bat , I am 6ft 2 about 95kgs and my bat is 2.9lbs with about 27mm edges and a higher middle cause the tracks tend to bounce more

Usually quite a few things to look for in bats Weight, balance, pick up, middle and handle and of course the quality of the willow.
Weight is the total weight of the bat and a heavy bat does not generally mean poor pick up. Balance is the centre fulcrum of the bat Pick up is how the bat feels in the hand when lifting off the ground and how 'quick' it feels in your hands. All depends on your batting style really. If you hold your bat aloft when being bowled at pick up is less important. If your bat is grounded when bowled at a light pick up will help you. Middle is the where the meat of the bat is on the blade. If you play on hard bouncy dry tracks then a bat with a higher middle is better. If you play on unresponsive wickets then a lower middle is better. As you can see it is all dependent on your style of batting as well and what you feel is better for you. Each of the above terms only has relevant meaning and feel to the individual batsman himself. |

I should add that pickup is also affected by the thickness of your grip. For a bat with more weight, a double grip can afford better pickup. |
