Old topic, but I guess still relevant, so I'll move it to the Coaching/Equipment forum...

hmmm, I'd generally be wary of getting bats off eBay - especially when the seller is keeping his feedback private.

Kookaburra is the best brand, the weight and especially the pick up of any Kookaburra bats are by far better than Gray Nicolls, Puma, Slazenger or any other known bat company.

best bats are bats made for you dont care what you have to say about it all i know is that a custom bat is made for your game like my screaming cat i had a hit at his nets and he told me what he thought i needed and it was absolutely the best bat ive ever used, but just remeber im saying this but every bat has a middle you just have to find it

i have to say fusion cricket bats are bril, but so are Bellingham and Smith.
woodworm are not always what you think they are, very few bats are made by themselves (thats all ill say)!
the main problem with bats such as kooka, gm, gn, newbery and some others is that they are machine pressed, i.e. not pressed individualy, and as Bill from Fusion says, if you do the correct pressing for each individual cleft, you can make a good bat from average wood, but bad pressing can ruin a bat from great wood!

The best big name company is gm, as they use the best willow on their bats.
Although top 4 have got to be lavr&wood, bradbury, fusion, B&S
yo ubuy one of them usually you won't go wrong.

Can someone please tell me about Newbery especially regards to pressing. I was told on two occasions I think that Graham Thorpe for example uses (at the time) Newbery with Kooka stickers. Newbery themselves say that several players use their bats.
Thanks

i know that newbery use a machine to press the bats, i.e. not the hand pressing that you get from most small companies, e.g. fusion, hawk etc
they use a machine press (i think) becuase they have to make alot more bats than they used to,
im sure that brian lara used there bats once upon a time, but many years ago

There is no such thing as the best of anything!!!You can't say that x is better than y.Well you can but it is only your opinion. It would make much more sense if the topic was called "the most popular bat".If you are looking for out and out performance, sure you can get a good Grays,GM,Hunts,Kooka, but in my experience it's a lottery.By buying a less well known brand you are more likely to get a good bat,as they absolutely have to live or die by their product.I was in a shop yesterday buying a cricket bag.Whilst I was there I had a quick look at the bats, and the bats that caught my eye were the Salix bats. They were all beautifully made, balanced, and just smacked of high quality. That being said I myself have gone for a Fusion Superbest,as I can pick my willow from the same pile as the test players can ,who have their bats made by them. There is no distinction. As far as I know this is unique in the industry as other companies have private reserve stocks for the pros!!
Mark.

well said marky i agree its a lottery with the big names.
my fusion experience has started i spoke to james yesterday on the phone and am looking forward to a test quality bat. James was so helpful. Whereas I can imagine going directly to one of the major manufacturers and asking for test quality willow and getting a weird look like "who the hell are you pathetic excuse of a human being - you DARE to ask for test match willow!"
I just hope that Fusion keep things the way they are!

You really can't say which bat is best because different players like different variables like weight, size etc. Obviously there are the things like qualities of wood that you should look out for.

At the end of the day most of the wood that makes these bats (in the UK anyway) comes from the same place. It's all marketing people. Choose your own bat not becuase this test player uses it. Pick one that FEELS right in your hands - they are the best bats. If you choose it on looks and brand alone you could be making a costly mistake if the bat is not right for you.
I personally have used Gray Nicolls for the last 15 years and have never had a bad bat. I've had 3 during that time. Dynadrive as a junior and now as a senior used a powerspot pro perf and have now got a longbow 5 *. I've been very happy with GN and will probably continue to use them but I must say I could be swayed by a custome made one.

Agreed. But I do believe you can get a great gun from certain batmakers more regularly, while others can be a bit of hit and miss at times. In my book Laver and Wood makes bloody top bats.

i have found that PS make a good bat. the OZ has a great pick up and feel. they also make a longer blade for us bigger lads. at 6"5 i struggled with aconventional blade. also with it being a small shop in stockport you are picking the same bats as county playes, i was chatting to john crawley when he was in there picking off the shelf!

But Super Fred's 2"9 bat could be bigger than anyone's 2"9 bat hehe. As per discussed, different willow and treatments of willow etc etc. He is a special player after all :). If you pick a cheap 30 quid 2"9 it would probably be like a toothpick.
