This may seem a simple question but.......

Say if a ball is thrown at the stumps and "just" clips the stumps, but the bails are not "yet" dislodged, the batsman makes his ground after the ball has "clipped" the stumps, a bail then slowly becomes dislodged after the batsman has already made his ground.

Is the batsman classed as being out of his crease when the ball hits the stump or when the bail appears to become dislodged.

Can anybody help.

I think that the batsman is not out.

"swerveman" would probably know better.

Well, this is the law...

Law 38 (Run out)

1. Out Run out
(a) Either batsman is out Run out, except as in 2 below, if at any time while the ball is in play
(i) he is out of his ground
and (ii) his wicket is fairly put down by the opposing side.

Law 28 (The wicket is down)

1. Wicket put down
(a) The wicket is put down if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground by
(i) the ball.
(ii) the striker's bat, whether he is holding it or has let go of it.
(iii) the striker's person or by any part of his clothing or equipment becoming detached from his person.
(iv) a fielder, with his hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used.
The wicket is also put down if a fielder pulls a stump out of the ground in the same manner.

...but your post gives the impression you already knew that!

I think I would give him "Not Out", but I'm not entirely sure.  It's a bit like that run out attempt the other day, when the wicketkeeper clearly had the stumps moving before the batsman made his ground, but the bails weren't off.  The third umpire gave him "Not Out".

I'm seeing some colleagues tomorrow evening.  I'll try to get a more informed opinion.

I actually saw another bunch of colleagues earlier on this evening, by the way, and the assembled company was totally disgusted by Inzy's treatment in the first innings.

OK, guys, it's official.  If the wicket is broken after the batsman makes his ground, even if the breaking began while the batsman was out of his ground, it's "Not Out".

WE,the common cricketer do not have to worry about this issue,it is only the telivised cricket that has the benifit of working out on replay when the ball actually hit the stump and started to dislodge the bails. I would also say the same as Merv and give not out, surley it is benifit of the doubt to the batsman,A very rare accurance indeed but it has happened, ?Hasnt it?

Thanks everybody for your responses, unfortunately for me I was wrong, I thought it would of been when the ball actually struck the stumps not when the bail appeared to have been dislodged, thanks again.
