I remember when Wayne Daniel and Sylvester Clarke used to terrorise batsmen on the county circuit playing for Middlesex and Surrey respectively.

There was a great story where Daniel was batting against Sussex and Garth Le Roux (another mean performer) decided to bounce him - even before the ball had passed the batsman Ian Gould the keeper was screaming "NOOOOOO" at the bowler as he knew that riling Daniel (normally a very mild mannered guy) could spell trouble - as it proved when he rattled them out with 7 for 12.

Clarke on the other hand was genuinely nasty when bowling - running in with arms and legs flying everywhere and perfectly capable of hurting batsmen - to the extent that he was appalled when his captain told him that beamers really were not on.

Yeah, some are more nasty than others!

Yep. But if all are nasty, some are nastier than others. Patto, Sylvestor Clarke and Colin Croft come to mind ....

Graham Gooch rates Patrick Patterson as the fast bowler who scared him the most.... A famous Goochie quote goes something like "Patterson was the only bowler who made me fear for my life. His key goal was to maim batsmen".

What a mention of Ambrose, he surely was one of the most feared bowlers, just like so many other gigantically tall windie bowlers. It's really a threat to face the ball coming from the good length on the rise right on to your body , height from which the ball is delivered really matters.

Everyone can knows how to bowl  the Doosera now but no one can bowl it as effective as Murali, and with his other variations he is the most feared bowler in the game now.

I remember an England/Windies test where Ambrose caused untold trouble because when his arm was at the top in delivery stride it was above the sightscreen - now that's tricky to pick up!

Fully agreed on that point. Very tall, genuinely quick bowlers are the hardest to play.

Actually they dont need to be 90 mph - just sharp. Joel Garner was not express but he put the fear of god into very good batsmen! It is the freakishly high point of release making the ball hard to pick up, followed by unsually sharp bounce, that causes the problem.

It is his unpredictablity that scares me. Look at Strauss, 5 wides and then the unplayble. Ian Chapel has been asking for a new L&T,
Lillee and Thompson/Lee and Tait. With the evrgreen McGrath as economy support, looks scary

Shaun Tait is feared because of his raw pace. Quick and deadly if accurate. Although if Shuan Tait can still keep his pace and make it more accurate he will be a scary bowler to face.

Agreed, Jacques is only a test away and Pigeon will have til Perth. If oh ah has not performed by the end of the second test, we could be saying farewell to one of the best.

McGrath and Langer are in deep trouble if they do not perform in Brisbane.

All I am saying is take someone like Justin Langer this series. With Jacques breathing down his neck, it won't matter who the bowler is because he knows the next time he loses his wicket, it could be the last tmie he plays for his country.

I enjoy this thread and have discussed Biga Lee as the most feared. I just thought I would look at it from a different angle.

Methinks Bobbi believes this thread to be rather daft.

Geoff Boycott still spouts on about getting Graeme Pollock out in the Newlands Test in 1965 - now there was a bowler to put the fear of God up any batsman!!

To a batsman, any bowler with thre pill in his hands ready to deliver would be the most feared because at that very moment, he is the only one who can take your wicket and in todays cut  throat industry, that wicket could be your career.

A bowler from which all the batsmen feels fear should be the most feared bowler and i dont think there is any one in modern cric.Even Kaneria go for a hook against Jerome Taylor who bowled 140+ kph. MC Grath is the most feared bowler i feel.

Makhaya Ntini isn't the most feared bowler i feel, the way Gayle balterd him in the Icc trophy,Ntini looked like an ordinary bowler.its just a matter of fact that he has bowled Quick and fast and bouncy deliveries only on Bouncy tracks.

I dont think there is any bower in present game who is most feared,i said its Shoaib but hes been banned.

If anyone remembers Justin Langer's 100th test against South Africa the first ball he faced was a bouncer from Ntini. Hit Langer in the haed. He was unconcious and didn't play any more. Poor guy on his 100th Test too. However Ntini is a feared bowler

In the current cricketers Ntini has been the most feared bowler, for his speed and very effective short pitched deliveries, any doubts ask any pakistani or lankan batsmen!
so far so good!
