I think the new software is better Dhoniis , but JP is the man to ask.

Back on topic - just watch Alistair Cook , he's going to score a shedload of centuries !! The youngest ever Englishman to score 4 test tons at 21 - a terrific prospect , this lad!!

It's a close call.
Lara look in great form but his age is the key factor and retirement.

Tendulkar is leading the race and has a few more years too go, a bit out of form but he is looking a bit impressive on the front foot in the 1st test against South africa so it won't be long before he hits another century. I think he will end up with the most Centuries.

Ponting is in the best form of his life. A Lot of centuries in the last 4 years and still looking too make a lot more. I do believe he will get 1 more this ashes but it's what happen with his form after the ashes.

After all i do believe Tendulkar will have the most, then ponting and lara.

Ponting is gonna get it for sure! I mean, he is only 32 somewhere there and he has more years than the 2 other meastro. Injury is the only think I can see stoping him from getting the most and Tendullkar himself if he can hit some form like yousuf or ponting.

I don't think Tendulkar can go above 37, he might retire after the World Cup. That leaves Lara and Ponting in the race, Lara will retire in few years, with some centuries. Ponting is always good, so he might be the next one to hold record.

What you are trying to say. It absolute nonsense. Whether or not he is in form, he surely will play for more than 2 more years. After what he has done for India over the years, i can't see he retiring or getting drop out of the squad.

What make you guys think Sachin Tendulkar is going to retire soon. If those other on the Indian team doesn't retire well i can't see that happening to Tendulkar.

You scared of Sachin Tendulkar

We all know that Tendulkar is 33, one ore thing we should know that he didn't start his career after 21 or 22. He started his career earlier than that. Lara started after 21.

Few weeks ago Sachin said he tired now. He should be after playing cricket for many years now. And injury has also affected career a whole lot.

Well he still might retire on the world cup if he plays really really badly, or injures himself agian.

Still though I reckon he'll play to 2010 or even 2011, barring injury or bad form

If Sachin plays till 2011 world cup that means is international cricket career spanned over 22 years would that be a record?

It's a race between Lara,Sachin & Ponting the 3 best batsmen of this era not to forget Rahul Dravid but he hasn't scored as much centurie not that it means he's not in there calss because he is.

I think another player who is looking for 35 and more is Mohammad Yousuf if he carries this form he is up there among those players because he already has 9 test centuries this calender year!

That won't happen, AK.

All of you are going by the age. Does anybody even know when Sachin started his career. He is born in 1973, and made ODI and Test debut in 1989 (When he was 16). Right now hes 33, that means hes been playing for 17 years now. I don't think I have to tell everybody how many runs hes scoring.

I want him to play long as he can, but going by the stats, I don't think its long until he retires.

Don't you think the little master will try to do everything in his power to deny the rest from taking his century records! Come on, no matter how great a cricketer you are, some things like these comes in your head! Remember, Sir Don played for 20 years and nearly till he was 40. Lara started playing cricket at a young age as well but not international. Lara started first class at 16 I was once told!

Look at Ponting's record since 2002. Almost 1300 runs and 5 centuries each year on the average.  And he is only 32, in his prime and still improving!  He has all records at his mercy. He could play over 200 tests, score > 18000 runs, > 50 centuries, and even keep a career average > 57 (he's almost at 60).  Lara, even if he plays till 40 might atmost reach 40-45 centuries assuming prime form for the next 3 years.  Sachin seems spent... all those injuries, years and ODI stress seems to have taken its toll.  Even if he comes back a bit, I dont see him scoring beyond 40-45 centuries. Actually, its time for him to gracefully retire if he cant hit form in the next 12 months!

Hence, Punter all the way.  He is going to be 2nd only to Bradman as the best ever test batsmen of all time!

Come on dhoniisbest, if Sachin was really tried he would of retired from ODI cricket because he has some records that no one can break.

Great 63 by sachin when the other batsman made a poor proformance. Sachin keeps improving, and you guys are seeing it in this series. Look at the ways he plays beautifully off the frontfoot for 4 runs.

So how much of you guys think it's time for him to retire now? I guess you guys will be speechless now.
I know you guys problem, some of you is just scared of his fantastic batting which will cause pain to some of you and your team.
Guys, i have some bad news Tendulkar ain't retiring after no Worldcup, so guys start your crying.

Their is batsman who has not proform 40% of what i will called good and has not Retired, so why on Earth will a legend like Tendulkar Retire.

He did score 63 and I admit it was good performance by him in the 1st inning. What about the duck in the 2nd inning.

Its just shame how Sachin gets out, he isn't like the old Sachin, who could play in pressure.

Ponting has age on his side and he is in the form of his life, and the bowling standards are poor around the world, so ponting will even reach 50 test tons.

BF laugh as much as you want. Now that warne and mcgrath are out, the general standard of bowling is not good enough. Which is why so many b batsman are scoring ig runs at will. Eras of the past when Imran,Thompson, lille, holding, Marshall botham, and other greats were playing were the most testing for batsman and then in the 90s we had some of the true genuises in the form of waq, was, walsh, ambrose, donald, pollock (at his best), mcgrath and warne to name but a few, now who do we have to test the batsman? a few aging stars who are playing in their past glory, pollock, kumble, mcgrath, and then there are a few young bowlers just starting their careers. So in view of what i said, its the best time to be a an international batsman as scoring runs is far more easier in this era.

Thats a great a post, I think the only batsman in this era who have faced such quality opposition at its best are Sachin,Inzy,Lara,Sanath,Dravid & a couple more.

I agree completely with those names mentioned also adding the waughs and de silva to your list. If you look at some of the new batters facing the lesser bowling of today, you will be amazed to see how qucikly they notch century after century and the end figure suprises you. Sachin, Ponting, inzy, Lara and co worked hard to get their centuries against top bowling and it took them years to collect the amount of centuries.

Sachin has already played 18 years of international cricket. Its difficult for him to continue to retain it, especially since his contemporaries' form is much superior.
I reckon lara would soon be at the top, either in the sole lead or joint, before ponting  overtakes. With his current form, Ponting would retain the record for as long as he is playing. I doubt he'd be able to enjoy a career as long as his contempories, as he belongs to the Australian side, where the competition is very heavy.
After that, its for the new blood. And my bets on Yousuf. He is played only 73 tests so far, and made 23 centuries. He already has the 2nd highest centuries per test caps (.315) , next only to Bradman (.558). He may not reach Don's century in every alternate test, but with his 2nd innings form, all set to attain a century in every 3rd test.
