The Women's World Cup runs from 22nd March - 10th April 2005 in South Africa.
Eight teams are taking part , defending champions New Zealand , four time winners , Australia , two time champions , England , India , Ireland , Sri Lanka , West Indies and hosts , South Africa. This is the 8th time the competition has been contested. The format is simple , a round robin whereby all eight teams play the other seven with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals. The matches are 50 overs , with identical rules to that of the men's game. Duckworth/Lewis will be used in cases of rain interrupted matches. For the 1st time in it's history , the final will be televised live around the world and we can all get to see how good the girls really are !!

Is there somewhere online we can follow all this, as there won't be any TV coverage over here, that's for sure.

Inducker, just reading a bit more and apparently they're giving tickets away for some matches and the tickets for the final cost about R20 - not your neck of the woods, but will you be popping along for any of the matches??

All of them washed out, no reserve days so 3 points for everyone. What a start! |

Not in France no. But James Murdoch is doing his best for the rest of the normal world that don't smell like onions and have women with hair in weird places. In fact even the French have coverage. The Sky Sports and Fox Sports Networks will cover Europe and Australiasia respectively with ESPN giving the coverage for the America's and Asia but you do of course need Cable or Sattelite recption in most of those places. |

The tournament so far has been a non starter for the most part so far though Australia and India have now qualified for the next stage. NZ, the WI, England SA are all in the running for the other 2 places. I think NZ and the WI will get the places left with Australia obviosly going on to win the tournament. In the warm up games England set a few women's first class limited overs records scoring over 400 in consecutive matches setting records for highest team and individual totals for 50 over matches and dismissal of opposition for lowest totals. There was one truly bizzarre looking scorecard i saw in which a team had been dismissed for 70 with nobody making it into double figures barring the extra's of which there were 36!!! That's the third highest percentage of total runs in a limited overs innings coming from extra's in the history of the limited overs game, both men and women. I may well watch the rest of this tournament.

India slip up but Australia and England with easy victories. So who will take that final place into the next round? This is certainly going to make for more interesting viewing than the series between the West Indies and South Africa.

Sorry for the tardy response JP , i've been away mate. Without sounding too chauvenistic I've got to admit I'm not going to watch any of this tournament. South Africa in general is with me there too! Sadly , the ladies game is still pretty poor (Australia excepted) and the bits I've seen on TV news have made me cringe! There are some VERY average players in even the so called fancied teams and I fear that ladies cricket is still a long way from being taken seriously by cricket lovers. I'm surprised they're charging admission at all , the likes of SA , Sri Lanka and Ireland wouldn't beat an under 14 schoolboys side , that's how poor they really are. The final IS being televised live here , but even in this sports mad country this event doesn't get a mention over the afterwork beverage
So , for what it's worth , Australia to clout England in the final - maybe it'll be spiced up with a few of the Aussie Sheilas failing the sex tests!!

Sadly , you could be right JAL , I can't get excited about the test starting this afternoon - that's a terrible shame
Pollock played a 20/20 game yesterday , he didn't bowl but moved perfectly alright. In an interview he said he'll definitely miss the first two tests but expected to start the 3rd...........by then what little interest being shown by the cricket watching public might well have been snuffed out by two landslide victories for the tourists. What chance Kallis on another tilt at the fastest scoring record ?? |

There he goes again!
That was due to the bad selection decisions by the South Africans more than anything else not allowing him to play in the One Dayers against Zimbabwe and then selecting him for the tests - i mean his ankle would have gone stiff and then making him bowl 2 20 over innings in the space of 2 days was bound to make it sore was it not?
Well so far the crowd has shown very little interest anyway and by the end of the series i think the stadiums could well be empty. I think like in the series between Zimbabwe and South Africa everybody is praying for rain. I certainly won't be watching that's for sure.
Where'd you go? I've been away for a while too. |

Crunch time today team!! Aussie unbeaten and up against might Ireland!!
- if they lose this one I'll take a pregnancy test!!
Big game today is England versus New Zealand , whilst India play West Indies. I expect India to bounce back after their defeat to New Zealand two days ago - that'll make them certainties for the semis. Even if England lose to NZ today , they'll make the semis with an easy win over the West Indies this weekend. I'm sure they'll be going all out for victory today though - they'll not want to finish 4th and play the bushwackers in the semifinal!!

England did in the end lose to New Zealand but should still make the next stage of the tournament with the final place up for grabs between India and The West Indies. Australia are of course now through with New Zealand very nearly there with them.

The final round robin matches were all washed out over the weekend. Australia , New Zealand , India and England make the semifinals which take place on Tuesday and Thursday of this week. A reserve day has been made available for both matches.
1st placed Australia play England on Tuesday 2nd placed New Zealand play India on Thursday. South Africa's dismal showing (7th) means they have to prequalify for the next World Cup. Ironically they missed 6th place (automatic qualification) by ONE run - exactly the same margin as the men's side failed in qualification of the last world cup in 2003 here in SA !! |

Also exactly the same margin that South Africa failed to qualify for the final in 99. Oops sorry didn't mean to run salt in Inducker. Anyway Australia will easily beat England and i think New Zealand should beat India so i think there may well be a repeat of the last final with NZ still in with a chance of defending their crowns. |

No way! You're dreaming Inducker! Since when have England ever managed to beat Australia at anything? There's more chance India will beat New Zealand. Australia should definately make the final, and in this case the one thing i would really like to see them do is beat those shests of theirs!
I think the Australian effect is taking its toll on me! I'm turning into a randy old goat! ![]() Edited by JALRC |

Sky TV are showing the semis and final in the UK apparently. I don't have Sky and would have watched the game if I had, but now I'm quite glad I haven't.

Yeah they are showing and its being shown all around the world actually. England all out for 159 so it doesn't look too difficult a chase for the Aussies then. |

Yeah they are showing and its being shown all around the world actually. It's only the final being televised here , and we're staging the event !! It's been pretty shambolic really , the crowds are pathetic and the weather certainly hasn't helped. Without sounding (I hope!) too chauvanistic the standard of play is dire - the girls have a long , long way to go before they'll be taken seriously. The Aussies , New Zealanders and maybe the English show some measure of professionalism , but the rest wouldn't beat an under 14 school's side I'm afraid. Give 'em time , throw in more cash and I'm sure we'll see a huge improvement in the next 8-10 years or so. ....and the Aussies are battering England too - bugger!! |

92-3 after 30.2 - an outside chance for England and the RR is up to a collosal 3.4 !!
Jones goes for 15 after having a terrific hoick at Connor. Connor's figures now 9-2-21-1 - steady stuff. Worryingly for the Poms , Clarke is still there on 52 ( hey JAL - is she related to Michael - If so I hope it's his Grandma !!) |
