I am not sure why he was not picked for the World XI.
He would be in my World XI!

Remember that the World XI is only 11 players. And consider that there are 8 International Teams comprising a total of 100+ players to choose from. Inzi does not have the all-round abilities of a Kallis or a Flintoff, nor is he a bowler or an opener. So he has to compete with Dravid, Lara, Kallis and the like for a few places in the upper-middle order. No wonder he missed out!
|
|
JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

It doesn't matter what kind of batters inzi is competing with because currently inzi is better than most batters in the world. since the beginning of 2005 Inzi averages 94.67 in tests and above 50 in ODIs so his averages are good enough to speak for him and there is no reason for why he should not have been included in the world eleven.
i believe that the world eleven batting order is without a spine because they are without a world class player like inzi. Sachin has no right to be in the world eleven (and i'm happy that he can't play cause of his injury) because his averages and accomplishments might be very astonishing but lately he has been totally out of form. A few days ago i read that since sachin can't play, inzamam will fill in for him, but i still believe that inzamam should not have been a substitute player for sachin, he should have been in the original world 11 squad.

Let's use this thread to discuss the upcoming World XI v Australia games, rather than have several spring up as seems to have happened round here lately.
My money is on the World XI to win both series myself - what do others think?

Well your predictions are close - The world Xi will beat the Aussies 2-1 in the ODI's and as for predicting a tie for the test , methinks you've been smoking some good stuff! The test is a 6 day affair , so unless the weather turns foul it will not be a draw (still less a tie!). Sydney always turns , so Warne , McGill and Murali will be key - I think 2 are better than 1 , so I'll go with Australia for the test.

Historically , World XI's underperform. On paper they look fantastic , but they lack an identity. Playing for your country is the ultimate buzz , this series of matches are all about money.
They are all professionals , so I expect to see a competitive series , but egos might play a part with the world side trying to outdo one another. I hope I'm wrong and the cricket is exhilarating , but I think it might turn out to be a damp squid

So the World Xi beat Victoria in their only warm up match by 12 runs.
Dravid topscored for the World XI with 66, Pollock posted a beligerent 54 and Lara and Pietersen failed. Two wickets apiece for Shoaib , Murali and Kallis - Flintoff didn't play , although he is fit.
So they totalled 281-8 off their 50 overs , Victoria replied with 269-9. Brad Hodge hit a fine 92 and paceman Shane Horwood took 4 for 37.
10,000 packed the ground - a nice start to the week , Wednesday will be interesting.....

Not a great score, but I suppose with bowlers like Shoaib and co. it was enough. Doubt it'll be enough to beat the Aussies though.

JP , if the World XI score 280 in the one dayers , they'll win by a country mile! Go check out the stats for matches played under the roof at Telstra - 240 is more than decent , 210 is defendable.
Flintoff will make a huge difference too , I can't see him going for 4 an over , still less 5/6 like Kallis and company.
I expect 250 to be enough in all the games , I don't much like these enclosed stadia , too artificial for me.

The World XI have named their side for the 1st ODI starting 5.15am BST tomorrow.
Sehwag , Sangakarra , Dravid , Kallis , Lara , Pietersen , Flintoff , Pollock , Vettori , Muralitharan , Akhtar , Afridi.
That , of course is 12 players because of the silly supersub rule change introduced by the ICC.
If that side plays anywhere near it's potential , Australia will get thrashed!

I think this world team has the potential to utterly thrash Australia. The world team might not have the greatest bowling attack ever, but when Pollock gets to choose from himself, Akhtar, Flintoff, Kallis, Muralitharan, Vettori, Afridi AND Sehwag, you'd have to say he has riches in the bowling department. I can't see Australia getting past 220 against that attack unless Gilchrist plays a stunner (and he's been out of form recently.)
As far as the batting goes, this lineup could crack 300, easily. Sehwag and Sangakarra could score 100 in 15, Kallis, Lara and Dravid can slot about 100 in 20, Pieterson and Flintoff could score 100 in about 15 overs and Pollock has a weighty bat in the tail. They could go 350+ if they hit their stride.
I am really looking forward to this match!

I don't think he'd be much use as he's not 100% fit right now. Who would you put him in ahead of?

Kallis makes the breakthrough at last , bowling Gilchrist for an exciting 45 - Australia 80-1 after 14 overs. Katich riding his luck , especially against Freddie who's had him caught off a no ball and he's edged 3 times and got away with it.
Incidently the broadcaster is Channel 9 and Bill Lawrie is back to his best , talking of the fantastic atmosphere. I dunno where he got that from , as there's nobody there!

Well 20 overs gone and Australia are rollicking along at 118-1 , Katich 48 from 61 , and Ponting 16 from 17. The wicket is pretty flat and lifeless and the outfield slow. That doesn't auger well for the series as they're using this same pitch for all three.
At almost 6 per over thoughts of a big total seem right , but Murali and Vettori are playing and will be hard to get away. I think 260 is still a fine score , 245 defendable.

Funny ole game , cricket!! Aussie 131-3 after 24 , Ponting went , trying to belt Pollock , only to be taken by Lara. Poor Damien Martyn then got a duck , 3rd ball caught Vettori off Murali. Katich has gone to a good 50 and new man is Andy Symonds.

Katich goes !! C&B Murali for 58 off 79. Predictably , with the fall of wickets , the runrate has dropped to just a shade over 5 now. Clarke has joined Symonds and I feel these two need a decent partnership to help Australia to a good total.
Aussie now 146-4 off 29 overs , Vettori to bowl his 1st over , Shoaib at the other end has sent down 7-1-32-0. I think Pollock hasn't been forced to change much from their starting plan - maybe Freddie more expensive than they'd have wanted.

Vettori strikes and Clarke is caught and bowled for only 6. Aussie now 170-5 after 35 overs - Vettori fine figures of 3-1-4-1. We're gonna see a lot of slow bowling in this series!

39 overs gone and Australia pegged back to 186-5. Murali and Vettori in tandem and the runrate now 4.77. Hussy on 14 (24) and Symonds yet to explode on 22 (42). Pollock still has Afridi in the shed if he needs another slow bowler , or even Sehweg might turn his arm over....

206-6 and Symonds on the long walk back , holing out to Freddie at long off , off Vettori. Watson at the wicket with Hussey and less than 8 overs left....

As expected , Murali finishes his 10 overs (10-0-41-2) and is replaced by Afridi - be interesting to see where he bats in this powerhouse unit!!
213-6 after 44 overs....
