So much for supersubs - Afridi drops a straight forward catch at cover off Pollock , Hussey survives.

3.5 hours are up and only 45 overs bowled , they must have more time because of the new umpiring regulations.

Watson gone !!!! Fantastic catch by Lara , leaping perfectly to take the catch at deep midwicket. Another one for Dan Vettori , who's bowled beautifully tonight.

Aussie 237/7 after 46 overs , Brett Lee in and Shoaib back on !!

228-7 after 47 , Hussey on 31 (41) , doing a fine job. A single boundary in that score , he's doing a Bevan here !

Vettori does it again !!! Hussey on one knee , from over the wicket is caught by Pietersen for 32.
Aussie now 231-8 after 48 overs.

Dan Vettori , triffic figures of 10-1-33-4

Bracken the new man.....

One over left and a mighty 6 over midwicket off Shoaib by Lee has pushed the home side to a more than useful 243-8

....the time for 49 overs is only 10 minutes short of 4 hours....with two spinners bowling 20 of those , that's seriously slow.

I don't know the rules here , the World XI should be docked a few overs for their run chase.

Freddie bowls the last over and is unlucky against his old adversary Lee , who inside edges him for 4. After that he bats nicely and takes Australia to a solid 255-8.

Brett Lee a little cameo of 26 off 17 and Freddie the unflattering figures of 9-1-66-0 !!

Interesting to see the World XI batting order in reply - the new ball will definitely travel first up. I foresee Dravid and Kallis dropping down into the middle order , with Pietersen , Afridi and Flintoff following the 2 openers.

So Sehweg and Sangakkara are up against Lee and McGrath and looking a little nervy !!

They are 8-0 after 4 overs and Lee is really charging in !

No penalties against the World XI , they have the full complement of 50 overs to get the 256 required.

Drama already too !! Watson drops a sitter at 1st slip off Lee , Sehweg the lucky recipient. Looks like the Aussie fielding is on a par with their Ashes debacle !

It didn't matter , McGrath gets Sehweg , who pulls straight to Hussey at midwicket.

18-1 after 5.1 and in walks Kallis , so Pollock's sticking to the batting order at the moment. (Typical South Africans huh , no flair!!)

Sangakarra takes a liking to Brett Lee , one particular pull through midwicket was tremendous!

28-1 after 7 overs , the Sri Lankan 20 (28) , Kallis yet to score...

The old miser just keeps putting it in the right place !

4-1-4-1 has a nice symmetry about it , certainly Ponting thinks it's nice anyway!

Bracken has replaced the expensive (again) Lee and is bowling to Kallis , who has 2...

World XI 31-1 after 8.4 overs.....

Typical Kallis start , 4 off 19 , he's fair racing along!!    It's his method and it works for him , his strike rate will climb steadily as he settles.

After 10 overs , it's 39-1 - good contest here , but have the Aussies got the depth in bowling?

Ponting goes with Powerplay 2 (who thought up these silly names???) and it's still Bracken and McGrath.

41-1 after 11 , run rate required still a very manageable 5.56

McGrath does it yet again , Kallis lbw for 8 and it's 50-2 now after 12.1 overs.

Lara in with Sangakarra who's just lofted Bracken over cover for his 4th boundary.

6-1-13-2 for ole Scrooge - pretty good for an octagenarian!

Its' all happening at The Telsdra Dome folks !!!

51-3 after 14 overs and Brian Lara holes out to cover for a 2nd ball duck!! Big fill up that for the Aussies and especially for Bracken!! Rahul Dravid now in and the knowledge that we're almost guaranteed the KP and Freddie show !!

The Aussies'll fancy this now - the back up bowlers must step up like the quicks.

Sangakarra playing a gem of a knock here , full of classy shots. He's now on 44 (54) and making it look pretty easy. Dravid yet to score (6) and the big hitters to come!

Lunchtime for me , so I get to watch AND have a couple !!

My prediction , the World XI get home with 4 overs to spare - I think the Aussies' back up bowlers will struggle.

Sangakkara has moved on to 62, batting well now as they are 99-5. (27 overs) Not going fantastic. Flintoff is in though, just cracked a four behind four.

Someone emailed into TMS with the suggestion we call them 'FRED's, I think this stands for 'Fielding Restriction Enforcement Directive' or something like that. Better than power play, I think. I've adopted it for my scoring purposes anyway!!!

Sounds like Watson is bowling well to back up Lee and McGrath. Just got Sangakkara caught by Ponting as I type.

Out comes Afrida, strike rate of 161 v Australia, overall career strike rate of 108!! If he's in for any time, he could turn this game.

Afridi gone for 2, lbw Symonds. Big trouble now, 104-7. Everything rests on Freddie now.

Looks like it's all gone now, 144-8. Flintoff is on 30 odd but the game looks up for the Rest of the World, bar something extraordinary.

All over, 162ao, Ponting has taken the last catch, and Australia have won by 93 runs, Vettori the last man to go.

A disappointing batting performance from the World XI but credit to the Australians who look to have bounced back nicely from the Ashes loss.

A real damp squib - empty stadium , no real excitement and an easy victory for an average performance.

The wicket will be lower on Friday , slow bowlers dominating and the batsmen pushing and prodding. Come Sunday the pacemen will all be carrying "injuries" and Murali will open with Vettori !!

Using drop in pitches under a closed roof isn't cricket and no ICC spin will change my opinion.

My anethema to ODI's has been lifted into orbit - gimme the world cup and the rest can go away - when Bangladesh beat Australia and a World XI middle order of Kallis , Lara , Dravid and Pietersen can't make double figures , then I'm going back to bare arsed boxing!

1-0 Australia................thrilling stuff.....NOT

Sad , isn't it JP , I'm a cricket fanatic , but I've reached saturation point with one day circuses. Today I tried really hard to get excited about this match (see the number of posts!) and all I did was kid myself.

I've stopped going to ODI's , but ALWAYS buy a 5 day ticket to every test here , even against the minnows.

I'd love to get inside the heads of the players today and really know how much these meaningless games matter to them. There's lots of lovely money at stake in this series , but why haven't we been told what goes to the winners and losers - nice transparency yet again by the ICC! My cynical belief is that winning will expand their paycheque by about 5000 Aus Dollars - so why break a sweat?

Hopefully the groundsman will prepare a wicket that's fair at the SCG - we don't need a dust bowl and a 2.5 day match! October is early , even in Australia , and batting will be tricky on a good surface. Let's see a hard fought contest that has a proper test feel - this One Day Series strikes me as the cricket equivalent of that WWF circus - fit only for under 12's....

Yup, I was appalled to hear claims that Test cricket might eventually be done away with in favour of the one day/2020 versions of the game. The new ICC rules have done nothing to liven things up, except give a few more players caps and money for nothing.

I'm a huge cricket fan, but ODIs don't appeal to me, although county cricket one dayers are a different matter - they stick to plain old 45 or 40 overs as it will be each and there we go. And it works, as well.

But I definitely won't be busting a gut to keep up with Friday's game.

Having perused the world's cricket papers via the internet , it's quite clear that yesterday's Superseries Match was anticlimatic. Fine cricket writers like Gideon Haigh (Guardian) was particularly perplexed by the "official" attendance. The magnificent figure of 18,435 is that being bandied by our beloved ICC.

Now I'm not Einstein , but I'm not Worzel Gummidge either ! The official capacity for The Telstra Dome for this cricketing extravaganza is 48,000 (I know it's held more for different occasions , but that's irrelevant here) - but if that stadium was OVER a third full then I'll vote for George W Bush !! (not that I can !)

Do the powers that be think us THAT gullible? Corporate boxes are assummed to be fully occupied when releasing "official" figures , but Telstra doesn't have 14,000 hospitality places!!

At the toss Channel 9 had to position the cameras in the best place - that means with a good background of supporters - there were about 15 in shot. Yes , more come after the start , but by the end of the first innings the ground was still like a graveyard!!

Get real ICC , this whole exercise is a total waste of time and no amount of Walt Disney-Type fantasization regarding attendance figures will make it appear successful.

Fact - there was a smattering of poor sods there. Worse still , they had to endure the greatest cricketing non-event of the decade!

On a positive note , maybe , just maybe , the "test" will contain some decent cricket , but I won't be holding my breath !
