I've just recently bowled on a really spinny pitch and I was going round the wicket(I bowl right arm.),when I pitched a shorter delivery to trick the batsman I also bowled my heavy legbreak.
It landed short and slightly down leg side when it spun so much that it ended up wide down off side!

Going round the wicket's a pretty negative tactic, especially in one day games and at club level, you'll just get heaved through the leg side. Takes away LBW largely and reduces the effectiveness of a lot of deliveries. I know it's quite tempting because you'll get more spin, but spin is only really the final action of the ball from hand to pitch - flight, drift etc. Stay over the wicket unless you'r really stuck.
As for grips, there isn't a right grip. Just whatever you feel comfortable with and whichever grip helps you to bowl to your optimum potential should be your grip.

No.
That may be for normal spinners, but I have worked on going round the wicket. I normaly don't do it exept to lefties. When it comes to right handers,I find that going round the wicket and bowling with about 3 veriations an over can mess them up. Mind you,I only do this if they are already hitting me around. Otherwise,It is inviting a expensive spell. The reason for going round the wicket that ball was that I'd only just been hit for four and then six. Next ball my captain dropped him at first slip! |

thanks for the tips everyone. well i just came back from playing cricket with my friends and read these replies, so ill have to try this shizzle out tommorow, but one question. how the frigg do you bowl side on? i tried doing that before as i read on a site that leggies shud bowl side on, but it didn't help my accuracy. today i also tried the 3 finger grip but it didn't work. maybe im not bowling side on the correct way? ive noticed that a problem i have is that the ball get STUCK in my hand when i try to impart spin with my fingers, only time ive been successful at bowling leg break is when my wrist is facing the batsmen like an off spin and my wrist then turns to the left, which is another type of delivery that comes out well only few times, so how do i bowl it side on/?

You land your right foot parallel to the return crease, and that's therefore, side on bowling.

Your back foot has to be parallel to the crease, and your front foot should be pointing straight ahead or just slightly to the left (ie between 12-1 o'clock). Your non-bowling arm should be nice and high so you can make full use of your height, plus the downward drive you get with this later on'll help you get more pace through the air. You should be looking through this arm when you bowl. Your bowling arm should be cocked with the normal grip and should be beside your non-bowling hand. Make sure your hips and shoulders are in line with each other to acoid injury, and you should be leaning slightly forward - don't lean backwards because that'll ruin your back.
As you bowl, drive down with your non bowling arm towards the target and simultaneously bring your bowling arm through and bowl the ball. As you release the ball, pivot on your left foot, which will help you get more spin on the ball. You should drive through with your right leg. Your pivot should mean that the batsman will now see your other shoulder (ie he saw your left shoulder before you bowled, now he'll see your right shoulder).
Hope that helps.

Is it actually possible to bowl leg breaks with a tennis ball that actually turns? Or is it impossible? Or do I just suck?

In all honesty buddy, I've spun a tennis ball as big as a hard ball. One time when I was in college, we were playing on concrete and I was spinning them square. You can put more effort into the tennis ball, seeing it is lighter and won't go up to much to the batters. It takes more practice to control harder effort into hard balls.

Any one needing help with finger spin I can help.
I bowled quick off breaks, and had two varieties of arm balls. Bowled a mixture of quick off breaks, darts and yorkers in my playing days. |

i used to be a decent spinner (both leg breaks, as well as off-spin), and started recently after a long gap. the good news is that i am more consistent than ever before...the bad news is that "consistency" means all i can do is bowl full tosses! leg breaks are fine, but all my off-spin balls end up being juicy full tosses, no matter how hard i try. its really bizarre, because when i bowl seam up i have no problem with length, but these offbreaks are terrible! i still get them to rip, but the length is too full..consistently!! any "common mistakes" that i may be making?

A few things you can do.
1. Lower the flight. That's the main reason for bowling full tosses. If you figure that's the flight you want to bowl with then you go to #2.
2. Slow down your speed. The more flight you use, the less the speed has to be, to allow the ball time to drop on the perfect length.
3. If those don't work, it could probably mean you're using a lot of overspin, which is hardly to bowl with a flatter flight. Try bowling with sidespin, that would be much more easier to get on target.
Hope that helps.
