An exciting day's 20/20 cricket at the ECB Academy, Loughborough University, saw the Financial Times (FT) cruise to a 23-run win over city investment managers Williams de Broe, in the Final of the Cricket World SOC2020 2008 cricket competition, on Sunday 10th August.
After the inaugural finals day last year had to be played indoors, there was a threat that it might be repeated as the clouds and players gathered. However the skies cleared, to produce a bright sunny day at the Midlands venue, host to the SOC2020 finals day for the the second year running.
Once all four teams had arrived from various locations and by a variety of means of transport, the two semi-finals were played simultaneously at noon followed by a superb lunch with added spice from sponsors the Jamaican Tourist Board. A range of Jamaican foods and music were very well received by all players and spectators. The final had it’s moments before the FT were crowned champions but the day was not without drama as the FT nearly were pipped to the final place by test match and Twenty20 sponsors Npower in the most thrilling of matches. In the other semi-final, there might have been three hat-tricks as the ball prevailed over the bat.
Semi-final 1
Financial Times 136ao (Barr 60, Gray 26, Swicki 3-36) beat
Npower 133-7 (Bayliss 43, Jones 34, Chaudry 3-37) by three runs
Semi-final 2
Tradition 87ao (Holyoake 22, Goonewardene 5-10, B.Vanstone 3-23) lost to
Williams de Broe 88-1 (T.Anstee 45*, Montgomery 27) by nine wickets
