Royal Challengers Bangalore 175-1 (Gayle 102no) beat
Kolkata Knight Riders 171-5 (Gambhir 48) by 9 wickets
Indian Premier League 2011, Kolkata
Chris Gayle, the newest arrival at the Indian Premier League 2011, made a devastating debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, thumping a 55-ball century to smash them to victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
In front of a passionate home crowd, the Knight Riders batted well to reach 171 for five but with Gayle then carving his way to 102 not out, that score was inadequate and the Challengers got home with 11 balls in hand.
Gayle, opening with Tillakaratne Dilshan, set about his task of embarrasing his erstwhile employers Kolkata Knight Riders and he managed it by hitting ten fours and seven huge sixes on a day where batsmen enjoyed themselves.
Dilshan played a rare supporting role, making 38 in 31 balls and after he was dismissed - bowled by Lakshmipathy Balaji - Virat Kohli scored 30 not out in 23 balls to ease the Challengers to a desperately needed victory.
Earlier, Gautam Gambhir (48), Yusuf Pathan (46) and Jacques Kallis (40) had all made handy contributions but this was a game in which handy contributions were not nearly enough.
Pathan had the crowd in raptures by hitting three fours and three sixes as he faced just 26 balls but his innings was a mere sideshow to that which Gayle produced later on.
