Scorecard

The mercurial Chris Gayle was at his brilliant best as the Royal Challengers Bangalore demolished Somerset in Bangalore by 51 runs.

The left-handed Gayle hit eight sixes during his innings of 86 from 46 balls and was particularly savage on medium-pacer Peter Trego who was dispatched for 50 runs from only three overs. Virat Kohli (33 from 22 balls) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (23 from 16) also added fluent cameos, meaning that the home side finished with a mammoth total of 206 for six from their 20 overs.

Somerset got off to a reasonable start in their reply, with the chastened Trego and Craig Kieswetter putting on 42 for the first wicket inside the first five overs, and Trego taking his tormentor Gayle for 24 off his one and only over. However, by the time Trego fell for 58 the match was gone, as Dirk Nannes bowled with pace to unsettle James Hildreth and Jos Buttler and Sreenath Aravind (two for 23) mopped up the lower order. Somerset eventually ended on 155 for six, meaning that they must now win their final match to have any hopes of progression.

Tomorrow sees the Cape Cobras take on Trinidad & Tobago and the Chennai Super Kings play New South Wales. Matches start at 1030 GMT and 1430 GMT respectively.
