Online retailer GetLenses (www.getlenses.co.uk) has offered a free contact lens trial to the entire Australian cricket team, suggesting that poor eye-sight may be to blame for their appalling performance in the latest Ashes match.

With one test to go, England is already celebrating retaining the Ashes after beating Australia by an innings and 157 runs in Melbourne – the worst defeat for Australia for nearly 100 years. Another commanding performance by England in Sydney on Monday will see England finish their tour on a high by winning the Ashes series.

“Clearly the Aussie’s need to get a firmer grip on their balls,” said Brendan O'Brien, the resident optometrist at GetLenses. “We’ve always advocated fairness, whether for consumers fed up with being over-charged for poor service on the high street or even Australian cricketers, who clearly can’t afford contact lenses. With the Aussie’s needing to dramatically improve their performance to avoid national embarrassment, they’ll need to make sure their eye-sight is perfect, so we’re really hoping they’ll take advantage of our offer.”

Now that we lead increasingly busy lives, evening is the most convenient time of day to exercise, and the ideal time for cricket clubs to hold mid-week practice sessions. Until now, it has been accepted that we should never exercise in the hours before bedtime as the stimulation of exercise, combined with rises in body temperature, would keep people awake. However, new research from the National Sleep Foundation has suggested that most people can sleep perfectly well after a workout.
