Gideon Haigh was named winning author of the Best Cricket Book of the Year for 'On Warne' published by Simon and Schuster at the British Sports Book Awards held at Lord's last night (21st May).
Gideon was unable to attend the awards but sent the following message about his win:
"As a cricket lover, I feel very blessed to have lived in Shane Warne's era; as a journalist, I feel immensely fortunate to have had him as a subject.
"Some of his luck now appears to have rubbed off on me. The British Sports Books aren't quite the Ashes, but for a writer they're getting close.
"I won't be defeatist and say that this is the best cricket result an Australian will obtain this summer. But for me it's a very happy one."
Judy Martin-Jenkins and son James were also at the dinner to accept copies of Wisden signed by Ian Botham in recognition of the posthumous tribute made to Christopher Martin-Jenkins for his Outstanding Contribution to Sports Writing.
'On Warne' will join the other winning titles from the night to form the shortlist to find the Best Overall Sports Book of the Year - the public vote for the winning title is now open - details at: www.britishsportsbookawards.co.uk and you can win a copy of the book - or another of the shortlisted titles - by clicking here.
