Hampshire Sign Shane Watson For Twenty20 Campaign
Hampshire Cricket is delighted to confirm that Australian all-rounder, Shane Watson, has signed for the Club as its overseas player for the 2008 Twenty20 Cup.
This will be Watson’s second stint with the Hawks having made a fantastic impact in 2004 and featuring in Hampshire’s dramatic Friends Provident Trophy success in 2005. A hard-hitting right-handed batsman and decidedly sharp right-arm bowler, the world-class all-rounder will be a key part of Hampshire’s Twenty20 squad this summer.
Hampshire Chairman, Rod Bransgrove said: “Watto was an instant hit with Members and fans of Hampshire when he was here in 2004 and I, for one, am very excited at the prospect of seeing him here again this Summer. It is fair to say that we have under-performed in the Twenty20 Cup so far, and we have been saying for a while that 2008 will see us focusing more and more on this exciting competition. Our signing of such a fantastic talent as Shane Watson shows our clear intent to compete hard to be in the Finals Day that we are so proudly hosting in July.”
Shane made his first class debut for Queensland in 2000, scoring 190 in his first innings against South Australia. He first played for Australia in 2002, in a One Day International against South Africa. He has since played 65 ODI’s, 3 Tests and 2 International Twenty20 matches. He has played a total of 14 domestic Twenty20 matches scoring an average of 27.7 runs with a highest score of 97 not out and has taken 12 wickets at 17.58 in the 8 Twenty20 matches in which he has bowled.
