Durham have signed former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs as one of their overseas player for the Friends Life t20 campaign.
Gibbs, who has previously played county cricket for Glamorgan and Yorkshire, said of the news, “Durham is really committed to their on the field development and have real ambitions to progress in T20, which is what attracted me to the club. There is some massive talent in the dressing room and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve. I’ve been performing pretty well in the T20 format and I think I can offer some real variation to the side. I’m looking forward to my experience contributing to plenty of Durham wins! ”
The 37 year-old has not played for South Africa since publishing his controversial autobiography at the end of 2010, extracts from which caused Cricket South Africa to terminate his national contract.
Nonetheless, he has continued to ply his trade for his franchise, the Cape Cobras, and this winter he has played for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League – where he hit 302 runs at an average of 43.14 – as well as being chosen to play for the Woodworm All Stars in the Hong Kong Sixes.
Durham head coach Geoff Cook was clearly delighted at the capture of the right-hander, saying, “It is a real coup for us to be able to bring a player of Herschelle’s calibre to our set up for the T20 competition. It just goes to show that Durham’s reputation as a progressive and successful club can attract quality players who want to help us win trophies. I’m excited by the prospect of having Herschelle in our team and I’m confident that he will add an extra dimension to our batting line up and some real personality out there in the middle.”
