England pace bowler Matthew Hoggard has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Hoggard took four for 29 in Sri Lanka's first innings of 188 in Kandy, before injuring his back in the second innings and struggling thereafter.

Hoggard was unable to bowl at net practice leading into the game, with England coach Peter Moores admitting yesterday that Hoggard "is not going to be fit."

Captain Michael Vaughan confirmed his unavailability at a press conference earlier today.

Hoggard, who was returning after a long spell out of the side, will likely be replaced by Steve Harmison or Stuart Broad if England seek a like for like change.

James Anderson did not overly impress in Kandy, meaning both Harmison and Broad may yet play, and a further option is the inclusion of a second spinner in Graeme Swann.
