Hugh Robertson MP Shadow Minister for Sport & the Olympics, took time out from his hectic conference schedule in Manchester to visit the famous Old Trafford Cricket ground of Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC).
Hugh was invited by the Club to update him on the investment and development at the ground and for him to take a tour of ‘The Point’, the new £12 million conference and events facility due for completion in June 2010.
Before taking a tour of the construction site Hugh, a keen cricketer and a playing member of the MCC, took the opportunity to get a few tips from LCCC coach Peter Moores on his batting stance.
Commenting on his visit Hugh said:
“I am a firm believer that great sporting events should be seen up and down the country. The new development is extremely impressive and will no doubt secure Old Trafford's position as a world class cricket arena.”
“I am very grateful to Lancashire County Cricket Club for sharing their plans with me and look forward to returning to see some live cricket in the near future.”
Once complete, The Point will be one of the largest conference and event facilities in the UK and is expected to have a positive impact on the region.
The Point will be able to cater for 1000 guests for a sit-down dinner, and conferences for up to 1000 delegates. The impressive glass-fronted, self-contained building will overlook the world famous Old Trafford cricket pitch, and inside will be a mezzanine bar area overlooking the main suite.
Geoff Durbin Commercial Director at LCCC says: “ This is an exciting time for Lancashire County Cricket Club. It was good that Hugh was able to visit and see for himself this new development, which as well as being good news for us is also good news for Trafford and the wider region.”
