Former England fast bowler Darren Gough believes England have what it takes to beat Australia and they will win the Ashes later this year.

Gough, in the 1998 Ashes series in Sydney, told Cricket World that he doesn't feel the Australian line-up is packed with players capable of stopping England winning, although he reckons that the likes of Mitchell Johnson and Phillip Hughes could come to the fore.

Gough, taking a break from promoting Pork Farms, the official snack partner of the npower 2009 Ashes series, said:

"What I'm excited about this year," he said, "is that there's not one player on their team [about which] I can say 'they can stop England winning the Ashes'."

Australia named their 16-man squad earlier in the week, deciding against calling up all-rounder Andrew Symonds, instead going for Shane Watson and Andrew McDonald. Neither have any Ashes experience.

"Obviously it always throws up a surprise," he added of the series. "There's always one player who comes to the front. It could be Mitchell Johnson, it could be Hughes."

Gough played in four Ashes series during Australia's period of domination between 1989 and 2005 although he boldly predicts that the current squad will be tasting victory in September.

"No one stands out for Australia, and that's why I think England will win the Ashes."

Gough went on to highlight the 1998/9 match in Melbourne where England , and the match in Edgbaston in 1997 where a set up a rare win, were among his Ashes highlights.

"The Melbourne game really stands out as an unbelievable victory. There's not many to talk about," he laughed.

"And the hat-trick, which was obviously something I was really pleased about."

Gough remains the last bowler to take an Ashes hat-trick, but if an England bowler emulates him on the way to a series victory, the Yorkshireman will be cheering as loud as any fan up and down the land.

The five-match series begins in Cardiff on July 8th. For the full interview with Gough, click here.
