ICC CWC 2007 Salute For West Indies Record-Holders

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. will pay tribute to four West Indies Test cricket record-holders prior to the ICC CWC 2007 Super 8 match at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Those who will be saluted are: the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers (as the leading Test all-rounder with a career 8,032 runs and 235 wickets); Sir Everton Weekes (for the most consecutive Test centuries – five) and the late pair of Denis Atkinson and Clairmonte Depeiaza.

The latter still hold the Test record for the seventh wicket with a match-saving partnership of 347 runs, fittingly scored at Kensington against Australia in 1955. Atkinson – then West Indies captain – amassed 219 runs while Depeazia – in only his second Test – scored 122.

Atkinson’s daughter, Kathryn Ward, and Depeiaza’s son, Denis Depeiaza, have accepted invitations to represent their respective parents at the brief on-field ceremony which will be attended by officials from the WICB and ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc.

The proceedings will commence at 9.05 a.m. and conclude at 9.15 a.m.
