Imran Tahir And Marcus North Sign For Hampshire

Imran Tahir and Marcus North will share the duties of being Hampshire's overseas player in the 2009 season, the club announced today.

Pakistan-born leg-spinner Imran Tahir joined the club late last season and played a key role in helping the Rose Bowl county to a second-placed finish in the County Championship while North has previously represented Derbyshire, Durham, Gloucestershire and Lancashire as well as Western Australia and Australia A.

Tahir, 27, picked up 36 wickets in his six matches last season at an average of 17.25 and he will return to Hampshire duty in June. In the meantime North, who has 8,757 first-class runs behind him, will begin the season with Hampshire.

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Marcus North for the first half of this season," chairman Rod Bransgrove said. "He is a very talented and exciting cricketer who I know is relishing the opportunity to score some big runs for Hampshire and really entertain our fans along the way.”

“Unfortunately it is not possible for Imran to be with us for the whole year, but in Marcus I feel we have a fantastic replacement for the early part of the season," first team manager Giles White added.

"He is proven in English conditions and his all round package will complement the balance of the side in all formats of the game.”
