Former Indian captain Saurav Ganguly is to retire following India's upcoming Test series against Australia.
"This is going to be my last series," the 36-year-old left-hander said in a news conference two days prior to the first of four Tests against the Australians.
"I have decided to quit. I have told my team mates before I came here. These four test matches are going to be my last," he said.
"To be honest I didn't expect to be picked for this series," he added.
Ganguly was picked for the first two Tests despite being dropped for the Irani Trophy match against Delhi and he subsequently failed with the bat playing for India A against New Zealand A.
Ganguly has played in 109 Tests, scoring 6,888 runs with 15 centuries, including one on debut at Lord's in 1996. while in 311 One Day Internationals he scored 11,363 runs.
Last week, an Indian board official said that Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Vangipurappu Laxman, were told to plan their retirements by December.
"As far as I am concerned and some of the senior players are concerned, we have not received any intimation from the board on anything," Ganguly said.
