West Indian captain Chris Gayle has been allowed to leave Australia and return home to Jamaica, where his mother has been taken ill.

Gayle's mother was admitted into hospital in Jamaica and the hard-hitting left-hand batsman has been granted time off to be with her.

Team manager Joel Garner confirmed that Gayle had been given permission to leave.

“The management and players in the team as well as the WICB are with Chris and his family at this time. We also want to wish his mother a speedy recovery,” he said.

Gayle will miss the opening four-day tour match against Queensland and Denesh Ramdin will lead the side in his absence but the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) have not indicated any intention to call up any replacement player at this stage.

The three-Test match series begins on 26th November in Brisbane.
