Sunrisers Hyderabad kept their unbeaten run at home alive, defeating Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in a one-sided game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

This win kept their hopes of a knock-outs spot alive, as they now stand third with 14 points from 11 matches. This loss ends Delhi’s season, in that they are out of the knock-outs race, with only six points from 11 games.

Delhi won the toss and elected to bat first, though it didn’t prove to be a smart choice. Virender Sehwag (8) and Mahela Jayawardene (11) got off to an uncharacteristic start, putting up only 13 runs for the first wicket in near four overs.

The slow scoring continued as Sehwag consumed 17 balls to score eight runs, without a single boundary. In fact that was a trait shared by the rest of the Daredevils’ batting line-up as none of them could get any boundaries, apart from Jayawardene and Unmukt Chand.

The Sri Lankan cricketer and Delhi skipper hit one four and a six, while Chand hit three fours in what was a bare minimum display from the batsmen.

Chand was the topscorer of the innings, scoring 17 runs, before getting bowled to Dale Steyn (2-21). Only three other batsmen reached double figures, including Jayawardene, Jeevan Mendis (11) and Irfan Pathan (13). Wickets kept falling at regular intervals and the Delhi batsmen were once again guilty of playing too many shots, with nobody willing to buckle down and build partnerships.

The Sunrisers were awarded for some fine bowling as a unit. No one bowler got on top and they all contributed to the Delhi downfall.

Steyn led ably and was well supported by Thisara Perera (2-11) and Darren Sammy (2-10). Ishant Sharma, Karan Sharma and Amit Mishra took a wicket each as Delhi were bowled out for a paltry 80 runs in 19.1 overs.

The target was never going to be too difficult for the hosts and they got off to a strong start courtesy of Shikhar Dhawan, who smacked 22 off 16 balls, with four fours. Parthiv Patel made 14 runs off 18 balls as the openers put up 33 runs for the first wicket.

There were a couple of hiccups when three wickets fell in quick succession, with Jeevan Mendis (1-16), Johan Botha (2-11) and Ashish Nehra (1-14) reducing the Sunrisers to 43 for three.

However, the target was too small to cause any real bother and Darren Sammy (18 not out off 20 balls, one six) saw them through to 81 for four in the 14th over, sealing an easy win.
