Kings XI Punjab 176-3 (Gilchrist 85no) beat
Royal Challengers Bangalore 174-5 by 7 wickets
Indian Premier League 2013, Bangalore
The experienced pair of Adam Gilchrist and Azhar Mahmood both scored half-centuries as Kings XI Punjab kept their Indian Premier League 2013 hopes alive with an impressive seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Gilchrist was unbeaten on 85 in 54 balls and Mahmood made 61 in 41 as Kings XI raced to 176 for three in 18.1 overs after Bangalore had posted 174 for five.
Chris Gayle struck 77 in 53 balls and Virat Kohli 57 in 43 balls but their efforts were not enough against an inspired Kings XI team.
Parvinder Awana mixed the ugly (high full toss no balls) with the brilliant (yorkers to dismiss Gayle and AB de Villiers) to return figures of three for 39 and Mahmood himself returned two for 24 to keep Kings XI in the game.
Gilchrist then lost Shaun Marsh (8) early but he and Mahmood added 118 together for the second wicket to put Bangalore under huge pressure.
And despite Jaidev Unadkat having Mahmood caught by de Villiers and Muttiah Muralitharan removing David Miller for two, it was Kings XI who held their nerve, Gilchrist hitting 10 fours and three sixes in all and Rajagopal Sathish adding 12 not out in six balls to apply the finishing flourish.
