Indian Premier League 2013, Mohali
Kings XI Punjab registered their second win of the Indian Premier League 2013 by defeating reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders by four runs.
They moved up to fifth place in the table as a result of holding on at the end, as Kolkata slipped to sixth places after suffering their third loss.
Batting first, Kings XI made 157 for nine and Kolkata closed on 153 for nine in reply..
Mandeep Singh led the way for Kings XI with 41 in 30 balls but after Jacques Kallis (3-24), Sunil Narine (3-33) and Sachithra Senanayake (2-28) had combined to leave the away side in trouble, Manpreet Gony hammered 42 in 18 balls, including four fours and three sixes to ensure Kings XI finished positively.
It was easily an IPL and Twenty20 career-best for him and a fine way to mark his first start of the season.
He then completed an excellent day by dismissing Gautam Gambhir for 60, returning figures of one for 14 in four overs.
Gambhir faced 39 balls and helped Kolkata recover from a score of one for two along with Eoin Morgan (47) but their dismissals, within 10 runs and 11 balls of one another put Kolkata under pressure.
Yusuf Pathan made 13 and Rajat Bhatia 16 but the experience of Praveen Kumar (2-26) and Azhar Mahmood (3-21) handed Kings XI a priceless win.
