IPL 2013: No Tendulkar, No Problem For Mumbai
Mumbai Indians 166-8 (Tare 59) beat
Rajasthan Royals 152-7 by 14 runs
Indian Premier League 2013, Mumbai
Mumbai Indians recorded their eighth successive win at home as they fought off a spirited Rajasthan Royals fightback to claim a 14-run win at the Wankhede Stadium.
Chasing 167 to win, Rajasthan slipped to 28 for four and 88 for six but it took the return of Lasith Malinga to finally see off Rajasthan, who closed on 152 for seven.
Mumbai's score had been set up by Aditya Tare, who was brought in to replace the injured Sachin Tendulkar and responded with a fluent 59 in 37 balls with 10 fours and a six.
After Dhawal Kulkarni (2-21) and Mitchell Johnson (2-23) tore through Rajasthan's top order, the recovery came from Stuart Binny (37 not out) and Brad Hodge (39) but eventually they fell short, Malinga finishing with one for 35 including the key wicket of Hodge.
Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson all made just four apiece, James Faulkner fell for 12 and Shane Watson made 19 before he was dismissed by Pragyan Ojha as Rajasthan's run chase quickly went off the rails.
Binny added 30 runs with Dinesh Yagnik (10) and then 56 with Hodge as they pushed Mumbai hard, Hodge hitting seven fours in 27 balls and Binny three fours and a six in 29.
However, Malinga stalled their progress, leaking only five from the 18th over and then removing Hodge with the first ball of the last to finally finish off the job, meaning even a six two balls later from Binny was too little, too late.
Tare had earlier received support from Glenn Maxwell (23), Dinesh Karthik (21) and Rohit Sharma (14) to help set up Mumbai's score but they needed late cameos of 17 in 14 balls from Kieron Pollard and 15 not out in seven from Harbhajan Singh to get them up to 166 for eight - a score that was eventually enough.
Both sides had already qualified for the play-offs but Mumbai's win puts them one point away from a guaranteed place in the first play-off, the loser of which gets a second chance to qualify for the final.
