Sunrisers Hyderabad 126-6 (Perera 30) beat
Pune Warriors 104 by 22 runs
Indian Premier League 2013, Hyderabad
The Sunrisers Hyderabad made a winning start to their Indian Premier League career with a 22-run win over Pune Warriors in a low-scoring match in front of their home fans.
Batting first, the Sunrisers made what appeared to be a very modest score of 126 for six before dismissing Pune for just 104 in reply.
Sunrisers made a strong start through Akshath Reddy (27) and Parthiv Patel (19) before Pune Warriors began to take control, going on to remove Kumar Sangakkara for 15 and Cameron White for 10.
Thisara Perera struck his first ball for four and went on to make 30 in 18 balls, a contribution that would take on greater significance as the game went on.
Ashok Dinda finished with two for 29 and there was a wicket apiece for Marlon Samuels, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma and Yuvraj Singh.
Pune took the opposite approach to their run chase, building their innings slowly and it wasn't until the sixth over that they found or cleared the boundary when Robin Uthappa lifted Ishant Sharma over long on for six.
However, the expected flurry of runs thereafter never came and instead there was a flurry of wickets as Perera (2-29) and Amit Mishra (3-19) wreacked havoc on the top order.
Uthappa ended up top scoring with 24 and with the required run-rate spiralling, Dale Steyn came back to remove the lower order, finishing with three for 11 in 3.5 overs as Pune collapsed to be all out in 18.5 overs.
Sunrisers' score of 126 equalled the lowest score by the home team in Hyderabad but it proved to be more than enough for them to help the home fans witness just their fourth ever win at the venue for their team - whether Deccan Chargers or Sunrisers.
