Irani And Ten Doeschate Hit The Heights

Essex Captain Ronnie Irani made his highest first-class score of 218 on day two of the LV County Championship match against Glamorgan at The Ford County Ground.

Irani eclipsed his 207 not out against Northamptonshire at Ilford in 2002 when he on-drove Alex Wharf for six.

The right-handed batsman was eventually bowled by Huw Waters after a 347-ball innings that included 30 fours and one six.

Irani and Ryan ten Doeschate were four runs short of achieving a new Essex record for the fifth-wicket in first-class cricket before the dismissal of the latter saw them fall agonisingly short.

The duo had put on 313 when ten Doeschate pulled a Ben Wright long-hop round to Robert Croft at deep fine leg.

ten Doeschate’s 148 (200 balls, 18 x 4) was his highest first-class score for Essex, beating his 105 not out against Loughborough last year.

Essex finally declared their first innings just before tea on 584-7.
