A host of cricketing events and activities will be taking place across the continent to mark the inaugural European Cricket Day on Sunday 19th May. Cricket enthusiasts from 31 European countries will take part in the celebratory day, which has been organised by ICC Europe, one of the International Cricket Council’s five regional offices which together aim to raise awareness, improve playing standards and increase participation in the sport around the world.
The European Coach Awards 2013 winners have been announced with the Outstanding Contribution Award going to Roland Lefebvre of Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB), as ICC Europe's commitment to coach development continues. Israel Cricket Association's (ICA) Herschel Gutman was awarded Coach of the Year for leading the coach development programme in Israel and Guernsey Cricket Board's (GCB) David Hooper won Young Coach of the Year for his contribution to youth cricket.
Worcestershire batsman Alexei Kervezee has announced his retirement from playing international cricket for the Netherlands in order to pursue his ambition of playing for England. He has played 39 One-Day Internationals and 10 Twenty20 Internationals for the Netherlands, including appearances at both the 2007 and 2011 World Cup.
Former England cricket captain Mike Gatting OBE and the International Cricket Council (ICC) Europe have urged MEPs to help bring communities together by promoting increased participation in the sport throughout the European Union. Mr Gatting was one of a number of key names in international cricket development who joined ICC Europe executives for a special meeting with members of the European Parliament Cricket Intergroup (EPCI) in Brussels on Tuesday 26 March 2013.
Cricket is set to play a major part in giving disadvantaged young people across mainland Europe the chance to better their lives and increase participation, thanks to a new initiative between ICC Europe and Cricket for Change. 'Street 20 Europe' - being launched in London this week - is based on the popular Twenty20 format of the game and will help to increase cricket participation to non-traditional groups in countries where the game is still developing.
South Africa will tour the Netherlands and play a One-Day International as part of their preparations for the 2013 Champions Trophy in England and Wales. The squad will be in the Netherlands from 26th May to 1st June and the ODI will be played on 31st May in Amstelveen - the first time Netherlands have hosted South Africa.
