Jacques Kallis, The Best All-Rounder Ever?
I'm too young to have seen Garry Sobers in action, but surely Jacques Kallis has to go down among the best all-rounders to have ever played the game?
Kallis would walk into any team as a specialist batsman and most teams as a specialist bowler. With bucket hands he was a reliable slip fielder and has even adapted his game to become a quality Twenty20 cricketer as well.
Now he has called time on his Test career and it is time to say goodbye, once again, to one of the best players of his generation. Tendulkar, Ponting, and now Kallis have made their departures, although he will at least try to play on until the 2015 World Cup.
Who will South Africa replace him with? AB de Villiers, who keeps wicket, captains and bats is a different sort of all-rounder but maybe Kallis exiting the scene will give Quinton de Kock an opportunity - perhaps with the gloves, perhaps not.
Whatever happens, it is hard to see South Africa being toppled from their position at the top of the rankings but the clash with Australia in a couple of months should be tasty.
